Rhone The Brazillian TDs and Carl Brown's appointment............ Tue Dec 18 05:38:43 2001
I have already said what I was told about the apparel contracts with Kappa and Uhlsport, as well as the player contracts for Gardner, Fuller and Whitmore, so as promised I will now give you the "edited version" of what I was told, about the "situation" with Simoes, Lazaroni and de Oliviera and the subsiquent hiring of Carl Brown as our new Technical Director.
I was told that - Simoes had decided to leave, from early to mid 1999, long before he was offered the position at Flamengo; Lazaroni didn't think we were serious about developing a football program; de Oliviera was "asked" by Simoes and former FIFA president Joao Havelange to accept the job, got fed up as early as November last year, but was "asked" by Simoes to stick it out.
There were "basic" requests that they made to the JFF (and the government), that they thought needed to be in place for the national football program to efficiently and effectively develop - Total control to run the program (players were introduced into and removed from the program without their "full" approval, there were double standards, and practice games were either changed or turned down); Experienced assistant(s) (there were things, some they thought were basic, that the appointed local assistants either had no clue about or had problems grasping, and it was suggested that the local coaches needed good training and experience within a professional setting); Select the local coaches that they would work with (they wanted to interview and have some interaction with the interested and qualified local coaches so that when they got started there would be a good understanding between them, and they would know the strength and weakness of these coaches); Training facility (they wanted the national teams to have an equiped training facility of their own); First class playing surface at the National Stadium; Two overseas training camps each year: South America and Europe. As we can see none of these were done, although they were promised, and as a result the TDs lost respect and patience with those in charge.
Carl Brown was appointed TD because the "foreign" TDs that the JFF was persuing and those that showed interest prior to de Oliviera's appointment backed away after reevaluating the "situation". The general consensus was that the basic requirements needed to effectively and efficiently do the job were not in place, and they would not accept the job until they were. As they say - "Bad news travels fast", and I was told that the main reason Burrell tried to get a TD from Europe was because he could not attract a good one from South America (Brazil or Argentina), and it seems the ones in Europe aren't interested either, until certain things are in place and guarenteed. I hope Carl Brown knows what he has gotten himself into, because if this thing starts falling apart he may be left to fend for himself and shoulder the blame, much like de Oliviera. Imagine, we had the support and assistance of the Brazillian federation and the former president of FIFA, Dr. Joao Havelange, something that no other CONCACAF country had, and because of ignorance or poor management or incompetence or all of the above we are loosing it (I hope we haven't lost it).
