Incidentally the players suggested, included in each segment, i.e. defence, midfield, forward, four young players.

Would someone (anyone) care to state the ages of all the players? How old would each player be in 2006?

Are there others worth watching? Would you care to select your team for Nov. 11, 2001...in the "Office"?

Youth Versus Experience

. . . . As the Reggae Boyz prepare to meet the future?
Following on the results gained, thus far, during the Hexagonal, there rages a great debate on whether or not the Reggae Boyz should go for a win against Costa Rica in our last World Cup 2006 qualifier. The debate has those who think a win is a good way to end these qualifiers. Then, there are those who think there should be a wholesale dumping of the older players and a wholesale influx of younger players. This latter set argues that this is the way forward. Winning is of secondary importance.

This writer believes that there is another way. It is a way that listens to the arguments of both sides and thinks there is a common meeting ground in the middle. It says, as in life, the mature leads the young and naive. It says there is the need for experienced players to lead the young talents. Someone, it could be said, to hold the hands of the youngsters and lead the way.

Looking at our campaign dubbed the "Orient Express" with the wisdom of hindsight; one can point out many weaknesses. There was the unsettled situation which resulted in the final squad being selected after the first round of qualifiers. There was a failure to keep the squad together for any lengthy period. The failure to arrange prolonged training, traveling and playing of practice matches together. The going through three sets of Technical Directors, Lazaroni, de Oliveira and the Brown - Cargill tandem were but symptoms of poor planning. In this writers opinion that order of employment of Technical Directors was merely a footnote. They performed as well as could be expected under the circumstances. They all would have met the same fate. They had not the resources or "back office" support to prepare a "well oiled machine" as representatives of Jamaica's Football. They did not take the field with the Reggae Boyz. They had a mere assembly of players. They had a group of strangers.

Well! Some of those called and foisted on the field have been called frequently enough to hint that there is hope of "getting to know" each other's idiosyncrasies on the field of play. Therefore do not abandon all of these players. What is needed is a mix of deserving youth with some from this band of experienced players.

What are the aims of the Massive? If the aim is to build for the future, then a reasoned approach is the way to go. The question that must be asked is - Do you believe that the Reggae Boyz will one day be one of the World's elite teams? If the answer is - Yes! Then, the approach one takes starting with that November 11th match in the "Office" must be the first step on the way to making the dream a reality.

Someone once said, "Winning is a state of mind." At this moment it reminds us of the aura surrounding the New York Yankees. The Yankees are baseball's "winingest" team. Are the Yankee teams of 1994 through 2001 a winning bunch because. . . just a teeny bit, they are infused with that winning spirit because of past history? The writer does not know, but, we do know that winning is infectious. The primary aim of the Reggae Boyz and those who shape the team must be to WIN. It must be to start the infusion of that aura of success.

It would be good to start with identifying those necessary experienced players and the talented youngsters that will give to the Reggae Boyz enhanced resolved to start another unbeaten run in the "Office". It would be good to put on the field of play a TEAM. It would be good to have representing the Massive a band of happy warriors. Warriors with confidence in self and teammates. Warriors with never a fear of defeat. Warriors who will start the long drive to a successful TEAM REGGAE BOYZ! Warriors who will take that TEAM REGGAE BOYZ to the highest of heights.

This writer believes it can only be one way a blend of experience and youth!

Oh? This writers selection?

GoalKeepers: A. Lawrence, Ricketts

Defenders: Marshall, Linval Dixon, Ian "Pepe" Goodison, Shavar Thomas, Christopher Dawes, Marco McDonald, Robert Scarlett

Midfielders: Theodore Whitmore, Keith Kelly, Andy Williams, Fitzroy Simpson, Jermaine Johnson, Ricardo Gardner

Forwards: Ricardo Fuller, Barry Hayles, Deon Burton, Paul Hall, and Christopher Nicholas.

Missing a third goalkeeper, a midfielder with the attitude and work rate of Jamie Lawrence and a pure defender to play on the right at the back. You may care to take a shot at selecting the players and the starting eleven.

May the wish for a more meaningful era be realized!

BTW - What is the difference between this team and that named in "Outvoted in the Selection Room"?

Why was there a change on the thinking about Lowe's participation? Is there a place for him in the future plans of the Reggae Boyz? What do you think?

Brown looks to youth
Whitmore, Lowe, Goodison among omissions for Costa Rica game
GARFIELD MYERS
Wednesday, October 31, 2001WHITMORE

STAR players, Theodore Whitmore, Onandi Lowe, Darryl Powell, Fitzroy Simpson, Frank Sinclair, Ian Goodison and Paul Hall will be among the players missing from the Reggae Boyz line-up in the final World Cup qualifying game against Costa Rica at the National Stadium on November 11.

Head coach Carl Brown told the Observer yesterday that he would be looking to younger players including teenager Keith Kelly who is currently with French club Paris St Germain with an eye to the 2006 World Cup in Germany.

"What we are going for are players who will continue in the programme, players who we believe will be a part of 2006," Brown said following a training session for local-based players at Buttercup Park, Mona. "We are talking younger ones like (Ricardo) Gardner, (Jermaine) Johnson, (Ricardo) Fuller, Deon Burton, Micah Hyde. These are the ones we are looking forward to at this moment and we are trying to get Keith Kelly out of France. Hopefully we will get these players to join the local ones..."

The November 11 game against Costa Rica is of academic interest only. Costa Rica hasalready qualified for next year's finals in South Korea and Japan, while Jamaica, on eight points, are without a chance.

Brown, who along with Peter Cargill, was temporarily contracted to guide the national team following the dismissal of Brazilian Clovis de Oliveira, stressed that he was not writing off some of the older players, some of whom he suggested still had much to offer.

"We still have players at 27 that I believe can serve the national programme for another two years once they are playing well, so we are not ruling them totally out of the whole programme. But right now we just want to look at a base for 2006," he said.

Age apart, Brown said Goodison had still not recovered from a knee injury suffered in a motorcycle spill in Kingston on September 1.
GOODISON

Brown said negotiations were ongoing with a number of the British clubs to have players available for the November 11 game.

"We are trying to get Gardner and Johnson (Bolton Wanderers), it might be difficult to get both. We are hoping to confirm Micah Hyde (Watford) as well as Deon Burton (Derby County). Fuller is touch and go. He is in a touchy little situation at Hearts and we think that in his interest it might be best to leave him alone for the moment once he makes that request ... ," he said.

Brown added that US-based professionals, Andy Williams, Wolde Harris and Tyrone Marshall had been invited to join the programme.

Meantime Brown disclosed that Fabian Taylor of Harbour View and midfielder Omar Daley of Hazard had accepted invitations to trials in Saudi Arabia and would not be available for the preparation camp which started on Monday.

The Observer was told by Harbour View's general manager Clyde Jureidini, that Taylor would be on loan for a year.

Hazard striker Kevin Deerr had declined the invitation to the national camp saying he was not interested in the national programme, Brown said.

I think that Lowe could have a place in future teams for Jamaica. The thing is, any TD deciding to use him will have to be able to contain him for the good of the team. We cannot have an individual playing his own individual game inside a team!

Secondly, we do not need to build out team around one player. We were somewhat one dimensional at best with Clovis trying to achieve everything through Lowe. It did not take a tactical genius to see that if you shut down Lowe, you shut down the Reggae Boyz.

The sad thing is, Clovis had so much ammunition at his disposal to throw at the enemy. Due to his tactical short-sightedness, it cost us a spot in WC2002.

It was begging the question. Why every game you play, you want to come with the same strategy? A smart TD would realize that he has to keep the opposition guessing, but not so with Clovis. He just kept on and on, hoping that everytime he would run into some luck.

Also for the future, I would love to see Whitmore out of the picture. I am not one who thinks that our young players need to have the older guys around to emulate. We are fortunate that we have our young players in leagues where they can learn then being what they learn to team Reggae Boyz.
