Jamaica, Cuba play to tame scoreless draw
Jamaica and Cuba played to a quiet scoreless draw in the first of their two-match friendly series Tuesday at Campo Polar in La Habana, a result which left both teams with more questions than answers ahead of the final round of Caribbean Zone qualifying for the CONCACAF Gold Cup in two weeks. Both teams struggled to put together any sort of quality attack on a hard, bumpy pitch. The teams will play again on Thursday afternoon on the Campo Polar field.
Jamaica technical director Carl Brown brought a team completely comprised of domestic-based players, and took the opportunity to use seven substitutes, but admitted he did not expect a better contest.
But Cuban boss Miguel Company was missing a pair of starters in defender Alexander Cruzaza and Lázaro Darcourt, and while he was able to count upon defender Alexander Driggs and forward Léster Moré, they were still short of match fitness.
Still, Jamaica was fortunate to survive the first half when Claude Davis hauled down Maikel Galindo in the area, the young Cuban striker their best player on the day with his mobility. But Yenier Márquez put the resulting spot kick wide of the target.
Moré then found the back of the net with a header just before the halftime break, only for the apparent goal to be ruled out for a foul.
Jamaica should have taken the lead just before the hour mark when Ian Goodison's shot was spilled by goalkeeper Alexis Revé, but Fabian Taylor failed to beat the 'keeper on the rebound from close range.
