Cuba stop Reggae Boyz 1-0
SEAN A WILLIAMS, Observer staff reporter Friday, March 14, 2003
HAVANA, Cuba -- Jamaica's home-based Reggae Boyz put in yet another poor display and went crashing 0-1 to Cuba at the Campo Polar football ground here yesterday.
Nemeis Markel Galindo scored in the 43rd minute to give his country the win and Jamaica their third loss in four games since the start of the year.
Throughout the game, the visitors offered little in attack and were forced back by a technically good and quick-moving Cuban side.
The defeat -- which followed closely on Tuesday's dull 0-0 draw in the two-match friendly series -- was an obvious disappointment for technical director, Carl Brown.
'... We just didn't play at all in this game ... what we didn't do was to keep possession long enough to create anything ... but we did see some fight from the players however,' Brown told the Observer afterwards.
The Cubans -- slick in going forward and imperious in the air -- ripped through the heart of the Jamaican midfield through their skipper Yeniel Marquez, Jorge Ramirez and Lazaro Reyes.
In Tuesday's opening game, goal-scorer, Galindo proved a handful for the Jamaican backline and created numerous problems for veteran Linval Dixon and at times, Claude Davis.
It came as no surprise that he was the one to sink the Jamaicans.
Defenders Davis and Damion Stewart rose together to clear a lofted ball from the right, but an out-of-position Aaron Lawrence in goal came rushing in and spilled the ball for Galindo to tap into an empty net.
In the seventh minute, Jamaica's Fabian Dawkins' elegant waltz down the right flank sparked some hope of good things to come but the Village United's midfielder could not provide a good pass inside. Bad passing haunted him from there on.
Substitutes Kasai Hinds, on the pitch for just over 10 minutes, was given marching orders for retaliating to a vicious tackle by his opponent late in the game.
Midfielder Jonathan Williams, himself a sub, went into the ref's book for rough play, and like Hinds, was only returning some of what he got.
For the better part of the second half, neither side offered any football to applaud as the match slipped into a horrendous series of rough play and scuffles.
Both teams were using these games to prepare for upcoming Gold Cup qualifiers.
Tivoli Gardens striker Christopher Nicholas, originally sheduled to play yesterday pulled out because of the flu while veteran defender Ian Goodison also missed the game because of a painful knee.
JAMAICA -- Aaron Lawrence, Claude Davis, Linval Dixon, Gerald Neil, Oneil Dunn, Damion Stewart, Fabian Taylor (Damion Williams 75th), Theodore Whitmore, Fabian Dawkins (Jonathan Williams 75th), Roen Nelson (Lacon Brissett 80th) and Kevin Deerr (Kasai Hinds 75th). Booked: J Williams 75th), Hinds (ejected 89th), Neil (86th).
