The following article is by Earl "Matter" Findlater:

Recently, I read with interest how Theodore Whitmore was removed from Hull City's transfer list after stringing together a series of classy performances in that team's preseason. The first thought that came to me upon seeing that news was how some people only respond when their jobs are threatened.

Here it is Whitmore, one of Jamaica's most gifted players, was set to be ridden out of town all because, as Hull saw it, he was underachieving in his position. Towards the end of last season, Hull decided to go through the playoffs without Whitmore because they thought he was not giving his best.

I wish coach Clovis de Oliveira had had courage like Whitmore's club coach and took similar action against Whitmore and others who have so woefully under-achieved for Jamaica since the Hexagonal qualifiers began. Some of the others who could have stood a little benching or at least the threat thereof include Ricardo Gardner, Deon Burton and Onandi Lowe.

Simply put, Gardner has been lax at getting back on defense. Burton, until recently, was hardly a threat to score. Lowe, although he continues to be a prime scoring threat, has played so selfishly that he has actually neutralized his effectiveness.

As a result, Jamaica is tied for third place (but behind on goal aggregate) with Honduras. They are in a tenuous position with every remaining game a must win or at least requiring a positive result.

A closer look at Jamaica's present situation leads me right back to coach de Oliveira. To me, he has under-estimated the field in this final round of qualifiers or he at least has miscalculated the strength of the other teams.

From the outset, he said the competition would be for the third spot as the U.S. and Mexico had the first two locked up. While the U.S. is tied for first, Mexico is second to last right now. For some unknown reason, de Oliveira never saw Costa Rica and Honduras coming.

In addition, what else can you say about how woeful Jamaica's attack has been this round? de Oliveira's flawed offense has only produced 5 goals (2 by defenders) so far. That's the second lowest tally. Only last placed Trinidad & Tobago is worse.

Missing from de Oliveira's attack has been the crisp passing that any good attack needs to produce goals. In its place has been a frightening display of big, aimless kicking by the Reggae Boyz. The last match against T&T was a prime example of the big kicking tactic.

Quite frankly, I am convinced that some people will only respond when they're threatened with losing something. As we saw, Whitmore stepped up his game when Hull told him he was going to be shipped out.

Let's say we want the Boyz to play better and to make it to the World Cup again in 2002. Isn't it about time someone tells de Oliveira to coach better, get better results or get out? Like I said before, sometimes a threat is necessary.

Matter: You are threading on grounds which not many dare to even attempt. Unlike most teams, our TD is treated as an untouchable. We should not demand better performance and hold our TD accountable.

When all is said and done, if we do not make it to the WC, our TD can just pack his bags and move on. He would have added to his resume of coaching a national team in the WC Qualifiers. We would be left with players and fans who have to contend with watching the game from home.

If we are all satisfied with the Boyz performance and we think that the TD is doing a good job, then we can just continue to support blindly. If we think that we have the players to make the the World Cup, but the technical staff is not leading the charge correctly, it is our duty as fans to make our voices heard.

I might be acused of being an Arm Chair TD by some for voicing my views, but so be it. I was never one to really care what people have to say about yours truly.

I am not here calling for the TD'd head, I am only asking that he steps it up in the next four games. The mediocrity can't continue and it will not work. That is all I ask.

Respect,
Tilla

Hmmm maybe Burton could use some of this medicine. Or should I say certain? IN fact I can recall when the man them recall Boyd to give him a look and people got so upset that Burton spot was threatened.

All the JFF did was call Boyd to look at him and we were up in arms for the certain one as we feared he would lose his place. Jamaicans don't like change so I don't see this working in JA.

respect

Who knows maybe we can apply this to the TD

Shatta: As a member of the selection panel let me state that you can relax Burton as long as he can walk will be on the field.

I hope you know how seriously I take my job. Which job? That of having all the reasons why Burton should be on the team.

Did you watch the friendly international between Barcelona and Derby? As a selector it was my duty. Well Barcelona was miles in class above Derby...but, Burton's entrance suddenly caused Derby to resemble a football team. Bench Burton? Drop him? NEVER!

Karl, did you see Burton play for Derby today? Here is the match report

------------------------------------------
Barca catch Rams cold ^top
Derby 0 v 3 Barcelona Full-time
Kluivert 5
Kluivert 6
Deiberson 17

Kickoff: 19:45(BST)

Derby: Oakes , Carbonari (Bragstad 18) , Daino , Mawene , Higginbotham , Riggott , Kinkladze , Burley , Johnson , Ravanelli , Christie
Subs not used:
Bookings:

Barcelona: Andersson , De Boer , Reiziger , Overmars , Cocu , Kluivert , Bonano , Barjuan , Cruz , Rochemback , Deiberson
Subs not used:
Bookings:

Patrick Kluivert grabbed two goals as Barcelona won 3-0 at Pride Park, with Fabrizio Ravanelli failing his home debut with a goal.
The Rams were caught cold three times in the first 16 minutes with two opportunistic strikes from Kluivert and another from Barca's new Brazilian signing Geovanni Deiberson.
There was cause for optimism in the first half as Ravanelli linked well with Malcolm Christie in attack, but the visitors were far more clinical - Kluivert putting them 2-0 up inside six minutes.
Xavi chipped a ball over the ponderous Rams defence and the Dutch international striker raced into the area to slot the ball past Andy Oakes from 10 yards out.
Xavi and Marc Overmars created the second a minute later as the former Arsenal winger beat Daniele Daino and Chris Riggott before pulling the ball back to Kluivert, who made no mistake.
Geovanni got in on the act on 16 minutes as he played a neat one-two with Phillip Cocu and slid in to beat Oakes from close range - cruel luck on the Derby goalkeeper whose first three touches had been to pick the ball out of his net.
Christie, Ravanelli and Georgi Kinkladze all had half-chances before the interval while both Barca keeper Roberto Bonano and Oakes made further saves to keep the score down.
Youl Mawene, Seth Johnson and first-half sub Otto Bragstad were replaced by Darryl Powell, Paul Boertien and Stefano Eranio at the break with the Italian given a warm ovation by the home crowd.
Ravanelli's work-rate forced a corner on the hour and Eranio played a short one-two with Kinkladze before floating an excellent cross into the box - but Ravanelli's flick-on header went well wide of the far post.
Gabri missed a great chance to make it 4-0 midway through the half as he blasted his effort into the side-netting before Barcelona once more laid siege on the Derby defence.
Cocu's shot skidded wide, Roberto Gayoso was off target after racing into the box and Overmars wasted another shooting chance from the edge of the penalty box.
Deon Burton charged through the centre of midfield, before slipping an excellent ball through to Christie, but the former Nuneaton Borough striker shot straight at the keeper.
Oakes made an excellent save from Overmars two minutes later, before Roberto Gayoso again shot wide from a good position.
Christie missed with a header from Craig Burley's free-kick with four minutes to go, but the damage had been done by then and there was no time to make amends.

Diziah: Are you suggesting that Burton did not play?

I watched the match. Burton came on in the second half. His number was #20. The match report has left that out.

When he came on the Derby team looked like a competitor, at last.

The Derby team excepting for the first few minutes and after Burton came on looked like 2nd Formers playing against the Manning Cup/DaCosta Cup (take your pick) team.

NB. The match report (I will not say "giving a false impression") was kind to Derby. That first sentence gives a totally flattering impression of Derby's efforts. In the first half Barcelona keep possession of the ball for what appeared to be in excess of 70% of play. The Derby players were made to play "catch me if you can" being made to "chase and chase and chase...". Barcelona totally outplayed Derby. I believed no further goals were scored by Barcelona as there must have been a conscious or unconscious effort not to embrass their opponents.

Yes! Burton came on. If my memory is correct there was 20+ minutes left to play.

Diziah: Sorry! I misunderstood your reply. Reading further I saw that the report did make mention of Burton.
