Ricketts to be released
Lou Macari will not be signing Jamaican trialist Donovan Ricketts, who played the second half of the pre-season friendly against Cheltenham Town. Ricketts played the second 45 minutes after first-choice keeper Martyn Margetson sustained a groin injury and could not continue. Macari told the club's official website that he would not be signing Ricketts as he was after someone with more experience. Midfielder Chris Beech continued his comeback from long-term injury, playing the last 18 minutes of the match. He was sidelined for nine months with an Achilles tendon injury but is on course to be ready for the start of the new Nationwide season, which is rapidly approaching.

I did not think they would sign Ricketts. This is the same side who turned doen Pepe, and at the time they were in the 1St division. They are now in the second Division, but Ricketts does not have enough experience.
Ricketts is young, and have a lot of time ahead of him to gain experience. Maybe he should consider MLS.

A lot of our players need to consider MLS, the Belgian league, French league, Portugal etc. We are too set on England and trust me these lower division clubs are turning out not to be such a good deal after all.
I have noticed that they might not be too willing to sell these players on to bigger clubs as we first though and with the sell on clause making their cut much smaller they will do underhanded tactics to devalue our players and give them no other option but to remain at their club.(see Hull City and Swansea)
They will basically flop these players career. I think Hull could have sold Tappa a long time ago. However that is the learning curve for us and Ghana and Nigeria went through the same thing for many years.
We will have to learn the hard way and it will be the second generation who takes it to the next level. We have to start finding those teams that will be in European competition and "done the place" when given the chance. We are allowing these English to make or break us.
Who is looking at a third division player in England? HOwever a lot of people will see a player who performs well in Europe.
Our players will have to learn the hard way

Unfortunate for Ricketts, but there will certainly be other opportunities.
While I agree with the sentiments express by others--Our players should seek employment in other professional leagues--I must still wonder why so many fail whenever they get an opportunity in England.
I believe the reason is that they fail to assert themselves enough whenever they go on trial. Remember "Bugsy"? He almost got the job not because he was any better, but simply because on arrival he asserted himself and dictated the positioning of his defense, according to some reports.
Let me give another eg., if I may. Here in Maryland one is often told that to pass the driving test, one doesn't have to know how to actually drive, but one must know what it takes to pass the test. We don't drive on the road during the actual test and the fastest you may have to drive during the test is probably 10-15 miles. You are told though, that you must be correct in everything that you do. Sit upright, adjust your mirrors before driving and use them in the course of driving, wear your setbelt, stop behind the stop signs ect., and most important, listen to your instructor.
Now, when a player goes on trial, and in the case of Ricketts, is being ask to impress management in two games...Plus I am sure workouts. What then should Ricketts have done? I say go out there and shout like crazy...dictate to your defenders, around the '18' is your zone...Distribution of the ball will also be important at this stage. Notice that he played in the first game--They won I believe without a goal being scored against them. The second game was more or less the same. Why then did he fail to impress? We cannot believe that every club is putting up some form of hurdles against our players. But instead, maybe our players just don't know the difference between interviewing for and job and actually having the job. Inorder to gain the job, I believe that one must be correct in the basics of the position that one plays. We also know that following instructions during this trial period is very important to us landing the job.
Still, best of luck to him, but I do see a lot of flaws in our keepers. In fact, keepers from the Caribbean in general are some of the poorest...from a technical standpoint.
Respect and irie ites! Charmin

I like your analogy about the driving test. It is the same thing with job interviews, you have to prepare yourself for it. You do not just go in cold turkey and expect everything is going to be right.
Maybe, our players need better agents. Ones agent is supposed to prepare you for what is there. The candidate must know what to expect, and how is he expected to fit in.
Still cannot believe that Ricketts could not land the job with a second division team in England. He is young, but yes he is inexperienced, but how many of Huddersfield players have full internationals on their resume?
