    Gordon-Webley withdraws 'Jezebel' remark

    Tuesday, May 01, 2007

JOAN Gordon-Webley, who came under fire last week for allegedly referring to the prime minister as a 'Jezebel', yesterday withdrew the remark.
Gordon-Webley reportedly likened Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller to a Jezebel while addressing a group of party supporters at a JLP divisional conference in Albert Town, Trelawny two Sundays ago.
"I further withdraw any comments made at the meeting in South Trelawny which have caused offence," Gordon-Webley said in a statement yesterday.
The withdrawal came after she told the Observer last Friday that she was "merely reading the Bible, quoting from the Bible" when she made the comment.
Meanwhile, Gordon-Webley also withdrew her statement in which she chided JLP general-secretary Karl Samuda for apologising on behalf of the party for the Jezebel remark.
"Yesterday's (Sunday) press reports convey the impression that my posture is defiant of the position taken by the general-secretary on behalf of the Jamaica Labour Party," Gordon-Webley said in a statement. "This is unfortunate and I withdraw any comments that convey that impression.
Despite my passion and strong commitment to political issues, I am a team player and very supportive of the ethics and collective will of my party and I fully support the party's quest for governance that unites all Jamaicans in the fight against poverty and injustice."
