you certainly giving our music too much credit. A few people have done their things and make it big. How many other known artist do we have worldwide other than Bob Marley, Jimmy Cliff and a few others?
As for our sprinting it was just a few years ago we had to struggle to come up with a medal in olympics. In not so long ago we couldn't beat our caribbean neighbours in football, we couldn't even pay the fees to enter in FIFA mandated competition. Thanks to Burrell and his dream that has changed. Where would we be in football without Burrell and his dream and 98 world cup?
The fact is Asians especially China takes the arts and sports VERY serious in case you don't know and stuff as gynastics, chess, and other sports are heavily supported. The fact that they are not good at ahtletics is why it is not that supported.
Take the fact that most American kids have music classes by the time they enter middle school, and I can bet you in many of the countries you calling up is the same. In Jamaica we have one good pool for kids to compete in and I can bet you it is not the same in Barbados or Cayman. As a matter of fact most good university rather a more rounded student who play sport, arts and has a background in community development.
The fact that we have a few good musicians and I said a few because if you check the credits on the records you will see, doesn't mean we spend too much time on music. Most high schools in Jamaica have no formal music training or communication classes.
The fact that Jamaican can't read have nothing much to do with sports or art, instead sports and art help to give you the discipline to achieve. What Jamaican need most is proper parenting and people contribute to our schools. Blame our parents, blame the education system, and even some of the teachers.
We don't put enough emphasis on science and others subject but it is not because of sports or music but rather our lack of discipline.
