DK must go, say Hanover Comrades

    Published: Monday | February 27, 2012

Nagra Plunkett, Assignment Coordinator WESTERN BUREAU:
Growing discord among the ruling People's National Party (PNP) supporters in the Sandy Bay division in Eastern Hanover peaked yesterday and resulted in some persons calling for the back of Dr D.K. Duncan as the member of parliament (MP).
"D.K. must come out of Eastern Hanover and, by all means, we have to take him out," shouted an obviously irate Comrade.
Her bone of contention, as with many others, is the proposed replacement of sitting councillor of the Sandy Bay division, Mayor Lloyd Hill, as the candidate in the March 26 local government elections.
The Comrades disrupted the PNP's Region Six executive meeting at the Knockalva Technical High School in Hanover. Duncan, who is the regional chairman, prematurely adjourned the assembly, which was being held to discuss the party's preparations for the upcoming polls in Hanover, Westmoreland and St James.
"I am a man of peace and they came for war. They came and threatened people," Duncan said in explaining his reason for adjourning the meeting early.
"He (Hill) decided to bring these people to the meeting to disturb it, and to threaten the law-abiding citizens, people of the People's National Party."
    Strong support in Sandy Bay
The Sandy Bay division is a stronghold for the PNP in Eastern Hanover. In the 2011 general election, Duncan lost in the Hopewell and Chester Castle divisions, but was able to secure his re-election as MP on the back of a powerful showing in Sandy Bay. There, he polled 2,951 votes to 1,928 secured by Paula Kerr-Jarrett of the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP).
"We put Mr D.K. Duncan where him is. Him come there and see Lloyd Hill, and we don't know why him want to push him out," Altimont Downy, a PNP delegate, said.
Five persons - security consultant Craig Oates; former Mayor of Lucea and councillor for the Sandy Bay division, Moncrieffe Leslie; Aston King Jr; Garth Grant; and Orlando Patterson have declared interest in the seat.
In the meantime, Hill says the delegates should choose their candidate in a run-off.
"Have a selection that is not manipulated, is controlled by the party, and the guidelines are set, and the date and the venue is accepted by all the candidates involved," he said.
"People power is saying that the PNP ought to have a selection, and if that does not permit, I should continue as the candidate. You can't take somebody from outside to impose on us."
