  • Simpson Miller's swearing in to cost $3.3 million

    Daraine Luton, Senior Staff Reporter

Phillip Paulwell, the man leading the planning team for tomorrow's swearing in ceremony for Prime Minister Designate Portia Simpson Miller, says the event will cost $3.3 million.

Paulwell says the expenditure on the function represents contracts that have already been entered into.

He also said the ceremony will be conducted with the themes of sobriety and national unity in mind.

According to Paulwell, 10,000 persons, inclusive of members of the international community will attend the function.

He says Simpson Miller has instructed that the cost be kept at a minimum and so only about 40 persons will be entertained at a reception by the governor general after the function.

No vuvuzelas or horns at swearing in ceremony — Simpson Miller
BY CANDIESE LEVERIDGE Observer online reporter leveridgec@jamaicaobserver.com

    Wednesday, January 04, 2012

PRIME Minister elect Portia Simpson Miller today insisted that strict discipline will be the order of the day during her swearing in ceremony at King's House, the official residence of Governor General Patrick Allen, tomorrow.

During a press conference at the People's National Party headquarters at Old Hope Road in Kingston this morning, Simpson Miller insisted on order and discipline and ordered that no vuvuzelas or horns must be used. She also requested two over riding themes, sobriety and national unity.

The Prime Minister elect said she had mandated former energy minister Phillip Paulwell as chairperson of the ceremony.

No one will be admitted inside the venue without their invitation.

She said invitations are being extended to members of the political, business and academic community and an inflow of international presence, including the head of CARICOM and Prime Ministers from CARICOM, a number of congressmen and women and representatives from the diaspora, was expected.

Accreditation to international media will be given through the Jamaica Information Service and the service will be carried live on the electronic media.

Paulwell stated that some 10,000 persons were expected to attend.

It will be interesting to see if Portia will keep above the usual political cass-cass for the longer term.

If she can manage to do that and be the face of the govt, while delegating most of the policy issues to Phillips and the others, then maybe we will have an opportunity for a more accountable govt going forward. This is also providing that the JLP does not self-destruct as they have the tendency to do.

People say the Manatt hearings was a waste of time but while there was too much showmanship I think it was a step in the right direction. We need MORE of those!
