Arrival figures surge during Winter Tourist season
Tourism Minister Ed Barlett.
Tourism interests in Montego Bay are optimistic that the current Winter Tourist season will be a good one.
The optimism came after the Tourism Ministry announced that arrival figures were up 14% for the first two weeks of January at the Sangster International airport.
Tourism Minister Ed Barlett said the 14% translates to 10,000 more visitors and US$10.5 million in earnings to the tourism capital.
Jamaica received 1.92 million stopover visitors which resulted in earnings of nearly US$2 billion.
For this year Mr. Bartlett said officials are hoping to attract two million stop over visitors while earning US$2 billion.
The Tourism Minister said Jamaica’s traditional tourist markets continue to perform relatively well, with 5.3% growth being recorded out of the United States last year, while Canada had a whopping 7% increase.
Mr. Bartlett said the promotions team will be aggressively targeting Central and South America as well as Russia which are largely untapped and have the potential to contribute significantly to Jamaica’s arrival figures and earnings.
