The International Game Fish Association has certified the 41-pound, 8-ounce brown trout caught by Roger Hellen of Racine last summer as a co-world record.
Hellen's fish will be listed jointly with a 41-pound, 7-ounce brown trout caught in Michigan's Manistee River in 2009 as the all-tackle world record for the species.
Under International Game Fish Association rules, a fish more than 25 pounds must surpass the weight of a standing record by 0.5% to be listed alone as a world record.
"Rules are rules," Hellen said in a phone interview Wednesday. "The fish has the world record alone in one organization, and it's listed as tied in this one, so it's all good."
Hellen caught the brown trout July 16 trolling the Lake Michigan waters off Wind Point in Racine County. The catch earned him the $10,000 grand prize in the Salmon-A-Rama sportfishing tournament in Racine.
The Fresh Water Fishing Hall of Fame in Hayward certified Hellen's catch as its world record brown trout in mid-August. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources also recognized the fish as the state record.
The International Game Fish Association will give Hellen's fish one lone distinction - it will be listed as the brown trout world record in the 50-pound line class (the organization keeps records for many line strengths). Hellen caught the fish on a reel spooled with 50-pound backing, two colors of lead core line with a 27-pound rating, and a 20-foot leader of 20-pound test monofilament.
Hellen's brown trout becomes the second Wisconsin fish to be listed as an all-tackle world record by International Game Fish Association. The other is the 67-pound, 8-ounce musky caught in 1949 on Lac Court Oreilles by Cal Johnson.
