Int. housing conference cancelled due to H1N1 virus
Tuesday, 05 May 2009
The threat of the Influenza A H1N1 virus, or Swine Flu has led to the cancellation of an international housing conference which was scheduled to take place in Kingston.
The second Executive Committee Meeting of the Regional Ministers and High Level Authorities of Housing and Urbanisation in Latin America and the Caribbean (MINURVI), which was scheduled to be held at the JamaicaConference Centre on Friday has been called off.
The move is in keeping with the recommendations of the World Health Organisation (WHO) that persons postpone travel at this time, due to concerns about Influenza A.
Plans are however still in high gear for the 18th MINURVI General Assembly, which will be held in Jamaica, from July 15 to 17.
The three-day meeting will be attended by Ministers of Housing and Urbanisation from across Latin America and the Caribbean.
The 17th MINURVI conference was held in El Salvador, in September last year.
At the conference, the Presidency was officially transferred to Jamaica for the 2008 to 2009 period.
The regional meeting of MINURVI was initiated in early 1992, out of the belief that benefits could be derived through the sharing of information and experiences between countries of the region, particularly in the development of human settlement policies.
