DEEJAY Assassin, whose performance was cut abruptly during Red Stripe Live at Sabina Park on Saturday night, due to what the organisers term ‘questionable lyrics’ has released his side of the story.

According to the artiste, whose real name is Jeffrey Campbell, says based on the manner in which he was removed from the stage he thinks he has a responsibility to the general public to explain exactly what took place.

According to the artiste, upon being booked for Red Stripe Live, the songs to be performed during his set were submitted, in entirety and without edits, weeks in advance, as requested by the organisers of the event.

Assassin noted that he rehearsed the songs in their entirety on two separate occasions in the presence of representatives from Red Stripe. “There was no written or verbal communication from Red Stripe indicating any disapproval of the planned set or any discomfort with any specific lyrics or song.

During my final rehearsal I was merely asked to bear in mind the nature of the show and upon arrival at the venue I was given a generic briefing by the promoters. At this point there was still no indication from the promoters of any issue or objection to the planned performance,” the artiste said.

Red Stripe apologises to Assassin

Published: Wednesday | April 1, 2009

Red Stripe yesterday released a brief response to events which led to dancehall deejay Jeffery 'Assassin' Campbell being instructed to leave the stage before completing his performance at Red Stripe Live last Saturday night at Sabina Park. The release read: "Red Stripe apologises to Mr Jeffery Campbell, aka Assassin, for the premature end to his performance on Red Stripe Live last Saturday, March 28. Red Stripe is grateful that Mr Campbell supported its first live event to raise funds for its Learning for Life initiative and sincerely regrets that his performance was cut short."
Speaking on radio on Monday, Campbell said the show organisers became perturbed after he used the term 'fish' in his song Pree This. 'Fish' is a local slang word for homosexuals.
Campbell said he was surprised he was escorted offstage by MC Jerry D as he had submitted the lyrics of the songs to the show organisers and performed them in the presence of "representatives from Red Stripe" prior to his performance last Saturday.
"My management has since been contacted by Red Stripe's Maxine Whittingham-Osbourne, who admitted it was miscommunication among Red Stripe representatives rather than any wrongdoing on my part that resulted in this whole incident," read a statement from Campbell. "She also stated that, after reviewing the lyrics of the song, she agreed I did not break any of Red Stripe's company codes. She apologised for failing to communicate with me prior to my performance that any lyrics were deemed questionable."
