  • Thwaites calls for tough sanctions

Opposition backbencher Ronald Thwaites has suggested that government withhold funding for public sector bodies that are delinquent in submitting yearly reports to parliament.

His comments came after annual reports for the years 2002/2003 to 2005/2006 ( )from Fiscal Services Limited were tabled in Parliament yesterday.

The Member of Parliament for Central Kingston

said that the reports were of no use, as Parliament could no longer offer oversight on activities that have long passed.

According to the MP, tough sanctions need to be levelled against these bodies.

Prime Minister Bruce Golding has described as a disappointing surprise, the list of public agencies that have been delinquent in providing parliament with on time annual reviews.

He added that some of them were engaging in practices that ought not to be allowed to continue.
"Jamaica's future reflects its past, having attained only one per cent annual growth over 30 years whilst neighbours have grown at five per cent." (Article)
