Hypermiling: Fool-Proof Way To Save Gas

Wayne Gerdes Used Technique To Average 81 Miles Per Gallon On Recent Trip From Chicago To NYC

Drivers Could Cut Their Gas Bills In Half By Being Smart

NEW YORK (CBS) ― Another day, another record-breaking oil price -- on Wednesday it topped $132 a barrel.

Gas has climbed to more than $3.80 a gallon.

So what can consumers do to ease the pain at the pump?

CBS 2 HD has learned of a new way to drive that could save you as much as half on your gas bill, and just in time for the summer driving season.

When Wayne Gerdes is on the road, his Sunday driving may drive you crazy but there's a method to his slow-paced madness.

"Average driver in this is paying $3.89 a gallon to travel 25 miles. I'm paying $2, maybe $2.10 to travel the same 25 miles," explained Gerdes, who is the guru behind what's called hypermiling.

Hypermiling is a way of driving that can actually double your mileage out of every gallon of gas.

"The smoother you can drive, the more fuel efficient you can drive. Anybody can do this. It does not matter what you own or drive," Gerdes said.

How in the world does it work? It's actually very simple. First, you need to stop speeding. The harder you press the gas pedal, the more gas you're using. If you're driving over the speed limit, you might save time, but you're definitely wasting gas and money. Slow down a little if you can so that you're driving at or just below the actual speed limit.

Second, coast instead of braking. When you see a stop sign up ahead or a traffic light turning yellow, immediately take your foot off the gas and let your vehicle slow down by itself. If you wait until the last possible minute to brake, then you're wasting all the gas you used when you could have been slowing down.

Third, use cruise control or put your car in neutral which will take the burden off your gas pedal preventing you from wasting fuel.

Also, take the junk out of your trunk. By cleaning out your car you can save on gas. And with the summer months upon us, keep your air conditioner on low or drive around town with the windows down.

Gerdes recently drove from Chicago to New York City on one tank of gas. While it's true he was driving an already fuel efficient Prius, he still averaged 81 miles per gallon by hypermiling.
