Jamaican gay activist seeks refugee status in Canada

TORONTO (CBC) - Gareth Henry, a leading Jamaican gay activist, has come to Canada claiming refugee status.


Henry says 13 of his friends have been killed in Jamaica since 2004. One 22-year-old friend who was suspected of being gay was chased by a mob, Henry told CBC News. The only place he could run to was the harbour. He couldn't swim.

"Everyone," said Henry, "stood and watched him drown."

Henry, who was vocal activist with the country's pioneering gay-rights organization J-FLAG, Jamaica Forum for Lesbians, All-Sexuals and Gays, has had his own troubling experiences. On Valentine's Day last year, he was caught in a pharmacy and surrounded by an angry mob, he said. There was no protection from the police or state.

"When you find police officers who are leading mob attacks, turning up at people's home like myself, pointing guns at my window, with civilians with them, and saying that I need to leave or they're going to kill me, it reinforces homophobia."

Henry said he wants to stay in Canada and is claiming refugee status. He says Canada understands and protects human rights and that Jamaica is not a place he can return to.

They play the victim role and exaggerate to strengthen their appeal for refugee status. He perhaps didn't even know the fish(the one wha cant swim cause water will full up inna dem) that drowned. Also, it is widely known that the majority of gay murders are done by their very own jealous gay lovers, that is why he didn't make mention of his other 12 "friends" that were allegedly murdered by mobs. They always go abroad with their bull-ish stories to get citizenship. I remember one ************ that claimed that a crowd of ppl kill the Jflag dude and carried his mauled body in the streets and danced around it, when in fact, he was stabbed by his lover and the police took the body off of his property, there was a "Mob" of perhaps 3 ppl from the neighbourhood(it was an upscale area) that watched behind the yellow tape as the police took his body away. I watched that news report.

They make us out to look like savages for the mere purpose of strengthening their case in seeking asylum.

in a related story had a discussion with a couple (man from south africa and wife from australia) who were more stringent in advocating for the rights of homosexuals than aborigines or black people.....it look like seh fi an aborigine or to get any kind of recognition him had to be a homo....
