  • JUTC workers becoming more restive

Workers at Jamaica Urban Transit Company, (JUTC), are growing increasingly restive as unpaid statutory deductions continue to pile-up.

Disgruntled workers told our News centre that they are now having trouble with a loan scheme, set up months ago between the JUTC and the Cable and Wireless Cooperative Credit Union.

One worker said money is being deducted from her fortnightly pay-cheque as repayment for a loan she took under the scheme.

However, she discovered that none of that money has been paid over to the Credit Union.

Transport Minister Mike Henry, said the matter of the outstanding deductions is a carry-over from the previous administration.

However he offered the assurance that everything is being done to rectify the situation.

He said he is holding discussions with the chairman of the bus company.

The Ministry of Finance has also been asked intervene so that the issue can be addressed by the end of the year.

On Tuesday, the Ministry of Labour was asked to intervene in the brewing dispute between the management of the JUTC and the University and Allied Workers Union (UAWU).

The UAWU accused the JUTC's management of failing to fully implement a two week old agreement for the workers' outstanding statutory deductions to be paid over to the relevant entities.

The union represents more than 2,000 JUTC workers.
