<P class=StoryText align=justify>MONTEGO BAY, St James - The first round of the ISSA/Pepsi/JN daCosta Cup rural area schoolboys' football competition will end this afternoon in two zones, while the return rounds for the other 10 zones will get going.
While no school has yet officially secured their place in the Inter-Zone, one school - Yallahs in Zone L have already been eliminated from consideration.
Yallahs, who are on one point and with six games to go, cannot pass either Titchfield or St Thomas Technical, who are already on 16 points.<P class=StoryText align=justify>The first round served up several surprises, not least of which is Zone C, which has proven to be one of, if not the most competitive, while minnows DeCarteret College and Spalding High have had perfect starts to their quest for a first ever place in the semi-finals.
Despite losing several key members from last season's team that went all the way, defending champions Godfrey Stewart High were expected to dominate Zone C, along with first-time semi-finalists Mannings High School.
It is the Linval 'Palla' Wilson-coached Grange Hill that have set the pace and lead after the first round of matches with 10 points, while Godfrey Stewart have improved to third place on five points and Mannings are one place back.
If neither Godfrey Stewart nor Mannings improve in the second half, come November 1 when the Inter-Zone is set to start, they could be watching the games from the stands.
Eleven-time champions Cornwall College stand a chance of missing the Inter-Zone round for the first time in about 20 years as they are at the bottom of Zone A with four points.
The Dr Dean Weatherly-coached team has scored just twice this season after scoring 20 goals in the first round last season.
Supporters have theorised that the death of captain Omroy Wilson might have affected the team, but others point to the fact they have retained almost their entire attacking team from last season, including Richard Edmunson, who led Zone A with 13 goals.
DeCarteret College made it to the quarter-finals for the first time last season and are off to a good start again this season, dominating the less than competitive Zone F, scoring 10 times in two games played so far and are yet to concede a goal.
Spalding High are also off to a good start, winning their four games played so far and could clinch an Inter-Zone place by Wednesday.
Two other teams, Maldon High in Zone A and Fair Prospect High in Zone L also got off to good starts, but have since been brought back down to earth.
Maldon won their first two games and led Zone A, but have drawn and lost their last two.
Fair Prospect also won three of their first four games, but have lost the last two, including a 5-1 thrashing from traditional powers Titchfield on Thursday.
It is early days yet, but former champions Frome Technical High, St Elizabeth Technical, Munro, Clarendon College and Glenmuir have established themselves as the teams to watch this season.
Until their shock 0-0 draw against Black River at home on Wednesday, STETHS were the most impressive, running up a good record of 22 goals in four matches. The October 7 return round game between STETHS and Munro should decide who wins the zone.
Glenmuir also had their hiccups, drawing 2-2 against Garvey Maceo to break their string of 13 wins in Zone I dating back to the 2004 season.
The Jackie Walters-coached team, losers in last season's final, has conceded four goals so far this season after failing to concede even one in the preliminaries last year.
