MONTEGO BAY, St James — St James High can advance to the Inter-Zone round of the ISSA Pepsi/Digicel daCosta Cup schoolboy football competition for the first time since 2001 today when they take on Anchovy High in a rescheduled Zone A game at Jarrett Park.
St James are in second place in Zone A on 16 points, eight behind zone winners Cornwall College and must win today and hope Cornwall at least draw against Irwin High in another game for them to advance.
Irwin are on 11 points, but with two games in hand.
So far 22 of the 24 Inter-Zone places have been taken including eight of the 12 Ben Francis Knockout spots.
The qualifiers so far are Cornwall College from Zone A; Rusea’s and Frome from Zone B; Grange Hill and Petersfield from Zone D; Munro and STETHS from Zone F; Manchester High and Bellefield from Zone F; Spalding and Holmwood from Zone G; Clarendon College from Zone H; Garvey Maceo and Glenmuir from Zone I; Dinthill and Glengoffe from Zone J; Brimmervale and Annotto Bay from Zone K; and Fair Prospect and St Thomas Technical from Zone L.
Clarendon College, the first qualifiers from Zone H could secure the Ben Francis spot that is reserved for the zone winners with at least a draw at Lennon today, but the home team who is still one of three teams chasing the other spot will be pressing for a win.
Clarendon had managed a 1-0 win in the first round, but the most potent offence in the competition so far with 41 goals should be able to take it up a notch or two if needed today.
The other Inter-zone qualifier will not be decided until at least Wednesday.
Meanwhile, three other Ben Francis Knockout qualifying spots will be decided today, in zones B, D and I.
Former champions Rusea’s High and Frome Technical are tied at the top of Zone B with 24 points and will play Merlene Ottey and Cambridge today.
Barring any major upsets, Rusea’s with their impressive goal-difference of 29, should win and advance to play the winner of the first round match between Munro College and Manchester High.
Cedric Titus will have home advantage against Ocho Rios as both teams are separated by a mere two goals in Zone D, both on 25 points after drawing their first round game 0-0.
