Jamaican defender traded by Galaxy and hit with MLS ban
Hours after being traded by the struggling Los Angeles Galaxy to Toronto FC, Jamaican defender Tyrone Marshall was suspended for three games by Major League Soccer for a leg-breaking tackle.
Marshall was fined 1,500 dollars in addition to his banishment for his serious foul on FC Dallas forward Kenny Cooper last Saturday while with the Galaxy, the team England star David Beckham of Real Madrid will join in July.
The Galaxy could use a scoring boost from Beckham, having found the net only eight times in as many games for the second-lowest total in the league. At 1-4 with three drawn, the Galaxy share the worst total in MLS with Real Salt Lake.
Marshall was given a red card for the tackle, which broke Cooper's right tibia and will sideline him one or two months and brought Marshall a mandatory one-game ban. The MLS discipline committee added two games to the benching.
The ban begins Sunday when FC Dallas will visit Toronto, which sent US forward Edson Buddle to the Galaxy in the deal for Marshall. Buddle had 42 goals in five seasons with Columbus then six goals with New York last year.
"Edson is a proven goal scorer as well as being a solid young player in this league," Galaxy coach Frank Yallop said. "We feel that he is a good fit for the club and look to get him back to scoring goals regularly."
Marshall played 125 games for the Galaxy, helping the club win two MLS titles.
"He is a quality experienced, international defender," Toronto coach Mo Johnston said. "He has the experience within this league we were looking for."
