In order to stay up to speed in an ever-evolving world, football must be able to rely on qualified professionals in all areas of the game. To this end, in 2000, FIFA founded, in partnership with the International Centre for Sport studies in Neuchâtel, Switzerland, an MA in Management, Law and Humanities of Sport. This is just one of the many university courses sponsored by FIFA in partnership with the CIES and brings together the expertise of the three European universities currently leading the way in sports studies - De Montfort University, Leicester (England), SDA Bocconi School of Administration, Milan (Italy) and the University of Neuchâtel (Switzerland).

As well as the staff of these three well-known and respected establishments, numerous professors from other schools and experts from various sports associations, clubs and legal institutions around the world also take part in the programme. To date, more than 70 students from 30 different countries have passed through the programme and many graduates currently occupy crucial positions within the world’s sporting organisations.

Another FIFA initiative in the academic world, also launched in 2000, was the João Havelange scholarship fund intended to encourage scientific research in the world of football. The areas of research include law, economics, administration, sociology, ethics, medicine and history. The scholarship serves to help students having completed a university diploma, a degree, a state exam, a PHD or any equivalent qualification.
