THE FA

The FA have agreed a new deal with Umbro.
FA agree Umbro deal
Thursday, 15 December 2005.

The FA is delighted to announce an improved and wide-ranging series of agreements with Umbro plc, including a new kit deal, to further strengthen the long and successful relationship between the two parties which stretches back more than 20 years.

The new deal is structured into five separate areas:

1. Kit design and supply: A new and improved agreement for The FA in relation to Umbro’s exclusive design and supply of playing and training kit to all England teams at all levels, with the new deal running through to the end of the 2013/14 season.

2. Sponsorship extension: An extension of Umbro’s current sponsorship agreement with The FA, also through to the end of the 2013/14 season.

3. Wembley Stadium Founding Partner: An agreement with Wembley National Stadium Limited to become one of four Founding Partners at the new Wembley Stadium.

4. National Football Centre partnership: Umbro will partner The FA in the further development of the National Football Centre (NFC) at Burton-upon-Trent, becoming the title sponsor of the Centre.

5. Official football supplier: Umbro will become the exclusive supplier of footballs to The FA at all levels of the game from July 2006. This will include supplying footballs to The FA Cup and all England teams.

Here’s a rundown on the key elements in each of the five areas:

1. Kit design and supply:

This improved, and longer, agreement replaces the previous deal, agreed in 2002, which was due to expire in 2010 and provides The FA with additional income for the period 2006-2010.
Umbro put forward an extremely competitive offer for the period 2010-14 which reflected the importance of the FA contract to their business.
2. Sponsorship extension:

Umbro will continue to participate in The FA Partner Programme, which gives Umbro various marketing rights, including branding at England Home Internationals. To mirror the extended kit contract, this element of the overall agreement runs to the end of the 2013/14 season.
3. Wembley Stadium Founding Partner:

Umbro becomes the second Founding Partner to be announced, joining Microsoft and two further Founding Partners (which are yet to be announced).
This partnership secures Umbro a variety of marketing rights in relation to the national Stadium, including the use of the pitch on an annual basis, a 20-seater Superbox in a prime location and a presence at all the events that Wembley Stadium hosts including sporting events and concerts.
4. National Football Centre partnership:

This stand-alone contract will see The FA and Umbro work together to develop the Burton-on-Trent site further, subject to the successful conclusion of various partnership arrangements and all permissions being granted for the project to be concluded.
Umbro’s investment will be used to aid funding of superb facilities including changing rooms, a fitness and treatment area, a gym and ball-court, a hotel and golf course.
This investment will play a key role in helping establish the status of The National Football Centre as the FA’s football development and education hub
5. Official football supplier:

The football supply contract will see Umbro provide the official matchball of the England teams (at all levels) and The FA Cup as well as various other FA competitions.
The FA would like to place on record its sincere thanks to Mitre, who have been a longstanding and valued partner of The FA in respect of footballs for nearly 40 years.
Jonathan Hill, Group Commercial Director of The FA, commented: "The FA is delighted to have secured what we believe is an extremely significant deal which will benefit all of The FA Group and guarantee significant revenues going into all levels of the game right through to 2014.

"This deal is much more than an extension of the existing kit supply agreement and will cover a wide range of areas where we believe our existing excellent relationship with Umbro can only lead to further benefits for the Group."

Michael Cunnah, Chief Executive of Wembley National Stadium Limited, said: "We are delighted to be announcing our second Founding Partner and in Umbro we feel we have the perfect partner for our world-class stadium.

"Umbro’s huge support and contribution to all levels of English football is well known and respected. The addition of another globally recognised brand alongside our first Founding Partner, Microsoft, is fantastic news for the Stadium.

"We are delighted to welcome Umbro to our ever-growing sponsor family."

Peter McGuigan, CEO of Umbro, commented: "We are thrilled to have strengthened our strong relationship with The FA and look forward to reaching the 30 year mark of working together.

"We also look forward to developing a similar strong relationship with our new partners at Wembley Stadium. Today’s announcement gives us the platform to drive our business forward, not only in our home market, but also in our growing overseas markets."

Martin Prothero, Umbro’s Senior Vice President – Football, said: "Umbro’s relationship with The FA forms the cornerstone of our commercial programme. I am delighted that The FA have demonstrated their confidence in the ability of Umbro’s global network to optimise our continued partnership.
"Today’s deal creates many opportunities on several fronts to improve football from the England team right through to the grass roots of the game. Our team at Umbro are very excited about working even more closely with The FA."

FA Partners

Umbro, McDonald's, Carlsberg, Nationwide and Pepsi are the five FA Partners that help us fund and develop our plans to promote football until 2006.

All FA properties are associated with official FA Partners. Here are the highlights of the scheme:

1. FA Partners is designed to support the promotion of the game of football, The FA's role within it, and to raise money to invest in the game and develop it at all levels.

2. FA Partners has been built on the premise of a small number of deep, long-term relationships.

3. FA Partners is the only official access to the entire game of football in this country, connecting grass roots with the highest levels of professional football.

4. FA Partners does not include title sponsorship of our two primary brands: Team England and The FA Cup.

5. FA Partners will offer companies the opportunity to help deliver The FA's long term strategy through support for a number of authentic development activities linked to key strands of grass roots football.

FA Partners has five top tier partners. Each Partner is directly linked to one of the five key strands of football - "the pillars" - identified in The FA's long term strategy:

Men's football - our mass market (Partner - Carlsberg)
Women's football - our growth market (Partner - Nationwide)
Youth football - our future market (Partner - Pepsi)
Community football - our "classroom" and our "showroom" (Partner - McDonald's)
Elite football - our "showcase" (Partner - Umbro)
Each Partner has access to The FA's top two brands - The FA Cup and England - and a share of exposure to all other pillars.

Partners are also linked to important grass roots development activities in each pillar, which in turn are carefully aligned to delivery of The FA's strategic plan.

The scheme builds the base from which football's future can be developed in this country. There will be benefits:

For Fans: The FA Cup and England team "returned" to the country.

For FA Partners: a more dynamic and less cluttered environment. Clear link from top of game to grass roots.

For The FA: Protection of key brands, less complex commercial arrangements, accelerated activity in key development areas (eg. women's, youth), better financial return to football.
