CONCACAF Gold Cup™ draws high TV ratings in USA
14.7.05 - The 2005 CONCACAF Gold Cup™, now entering the quarter final stage in Foxboro and Houston this coming weekend, has drawn top teams, increasing crowds and now high TV ratings in the USA. Last night's telecast on Univision of the Gold Cup first round match from Houston between Mexico and Jamaica is the highest-rated sports program (in any language) among U.S. Hispanics in the key Adult 18-49 and Men 18-49 categories since the beginning of the television season on 20 September, according to Nielsen figures released this afternoon.
The game, which aired live from 10 p.m. until midnight Eastern Time and from 7-9 p.m. Pacific Time, earned a 20.4 U.S. Hispanic Household Rating, averaging 2,221,000 homes. Among Adults 18-49 the telecast drew a 14.0 rating, translating to 2,797,000 Hispanic Adults in that demographic. The Men 18-49 rating was an even more remarkable 16.0 (1,674,000 million Hispanic Men 18-49).
The tournament is being televised on all three Univision-owned networks, and ratings are up significantly versus the 2003 event when the Gold Cup was seen on just Univision and Galavisión. Univision has seen a 102% increase in Adult 18-49 viewers for its three matches to date, TeleFutura (7 matches to date) has a three-fold improvement over Galavisión's ratings in 2003, and Galavisión's eight-match telecasts in this year's tournament show a growth of 90% in Adult 18-49 viewers.
