As talented soccer superstars began to emerge in the U.S. at the U-21, U-17, and even U-15 levels, the U.S. Soccer Federation and Major League Soccer began to develop Nike Project 40 as a way to allow younger players to compete at professional levels while still attending college.
What is Nike Project 40?
Nike Project 40 is a venture developed by the USSF and MLS in order to provide America's young talented soccer players with a way to play professional soccer without sacrificing their desire to attend college. These players play in as many professional games as possible over a five-year span while also attending college (their tuition is covered in a five-year academic package).
Are the players paid?
Yes, the players are paid the minimum MLS salary during their initial season. As stated earlier, they also receive a five-year academic package which covers their college tuition.
Do the Nike Project 40 players also play for their colleges?
No, playing professionally prevents them from continuing to play at the amateur level, which includes collegiate play.
What does the MLS get out of it?
In most cases, the MLS teams get high-quality players for a bargain price. Furthermore, the Nike Project 40 players do not count against the official team roster of 20 players. Teams and coaches gain the opportunity to play with and coach players with some of the best potential in MLS.
What famous players have been involved with Nike Project 40?
Freddy Adu leads the list in 2004 as the most recognizable name among the Nike Project 40 players. Adu played with the U-17 National Team and the U-20 MNT in 2003 at both world championships. In the past, Landon Donovan, DaMarcus Beasley, Tim Howard, Carlos Bocanegra, Josh Wolff, and Bobby Convey have been a part of Nike Project 40.
How has Nike Project 40 impacted American soccer?
Nike Project 40 has allowed young soccer talent to develop at a professional level between the important ages of 17 and 22. It helps talented players to avoid the difficult decision of whether to try and play professionally or to go to college and earn a degree. Now, players can accomplish both goals through Nike Project 40. No one said playing MLS soccer and earning college credit would be easy, but these players have managed to stay on top of the game. |
