Ja cruise past Grenada in final game
Monday, August 16, 2004
Jamaica cruised to a 2-0 victory over Grenada in their CFU Under-17 World Cup qualifier at the Spanish Town Prison Oval yesterday.
Jamaica had already qualified for the next stage of the play-off series following victories over Dominica and Antigua and Barbuda, rendering yesterday's game purely academic.
Scoring for Jamaica were Roy Forbes in the 35th minute and Keegan Brackett in the 66th.
In an earlier encounter, the Dominican Republic brushed aside Antigua and Barbuda 4-0 with goals from Jose Adanes (10th), Emily Scion (55th), Manuel Rivas (58th), and Luis Duran (88th).
In the Jamaica encounter, the home team dominated play by slick ball possession and incisive passing, spearheaded by Yashine Bravo, James Thomas and Kemmar Daley.
The young Reggae Boyz could have scored many other goals but were off-beat before goal, sending their shots high and wide.
Jamaica coach, Patrick Walters, was impressed with the team's delivery but expressed disappointment with his forwards.
"I was very happy with the way the boys played today. They were more patient and handled the ball better than previous games, but were a bit too anxious before goal, but such is football," said Walters.
Grenada's coach, Carlos Lewis, despite leaving without a win in the four-team tournament, was delighted with his team's performance against Jamaica.
"We didn't win but we are happy with the way the boys applied themselves, especially against a strong team like Jamaica... we are happy going home," he said.
The second round of the CFU World Cup qualifiers will begin next month.
