Former football coach of the Kenyan national team, German Reinhard Fabisch, has signed a four-year contract with the Barbados Football Association (BFA) to assist in the development of the island’s football with emphasis on the youth level.
The technical director expressed the opinion that the future of football in any system is as strong as its junior programme.
The German coach intends to work closely with coaches and players, especially players from ages six to 12 years old. Fabisch has made himself available to take in some junior and senior matches across the island.
In an interview yesterday he told the Barbados Advocate that he has a positive impression of the level of Bajan soccer up to this point.
He noted good movement off the ball and speed as some of the attributes he has seen displayed by local players.
While his assessment of the local football is still in its preliminary stage, the coach aims to have formulated an extensive, proposed four-year developmental plan by September to be approved by the BFA council.
Fabisch mirrored the recent sentiments of FIFA president Sepp Blatter when he expressed concern about the condition of playing surfaces and its importance to the progress of the sport in general.
Fabisch said that he would like to see the improvement of the condition of the island’s pitches also adding that he was looking forward to seeing the BFA eventually build its own football facility and grounds under the FIFA “Gold Project.” To be ready to compete at the national level, Fabisch said one system should pervade the island’s football. This system would come out of analysis of contemporary systems used internationally and taking into consideration the pool of local players that would be drawn from, their specific strengths and specialities.
Because of the island’s size the German is encouraged as the small population of young footballers are easy to monitor. Fabisch said that a unified approach by all parties involved was essential to the future of Bajan football.
