Once again it's world cup football qualifications time, with all the countries of CONCACAF vying for one of three possible and most prestigious spots to make it to world cup 2006 to be held in Germany.
It's one of the most glorious and glamorous time for any country in the region and the world at large, to exhibit national warmth and pride as a nation and a people. While it is a moment to be proud as a nation and be delightful in our works and ambitions, it's also worth while to be humble, expressing awareness of our short commings.
As a nation and a people, we have accomplished alot. Our accomplishment in the world of sports is reknown and remarkable. From soccer to cricket, athletics to boxing, even Bobsled. If we were interested in the game of hockey, I believe we could even excel at that. However, let us be reminded that even with such great accomplishments, we are still not altogether there when it comes to certain aspects of the game soccer.
The last administration of the JFF(Jamaica Football Federation), headed by Captain Horace Burrell had some remarkable achievements. Many great things were accomplished. Our team of 1998, worked wonders under the tutorleage of the humble and most ingenious Technical director we have ever had...namely Mr. Rene Simoes. What a man he was. He was a man of vision, discipline and courage which showed in his stewardship of the team, which eventually qualified them for the world cup of 1998.
I honestly believe that what was accomplished back then, was the laying of a foundation for bigger things to come. This opened our eyes to the awareness of what we can further accomplish...if only we humble ourselves, applying our talents meaningfully and deligent, NOT a moment to think that we are already there. There are still lots of flaws to be worked out in our game, however...many would have us to believe that we are now world beaters in the game of football/ soccer...no, we are not. If and when we go back to the drawing board, humble ourselves and be honest with ourselves admitting that there are still kinks in our program, then and only then will we be able to over come the pitfalls and claim our place amongst the greats in the business.
We cannot continue to claim talent, when our heads in the business still cannot figure out how to harness the abundance of talent to make it work to our collective betterment. Our players cannot exhibit professionalism today and be jokers tomorrow, we have to exhibit consistency in our approach. Similarly, we the fans cannot continue to worship and exhort mistakes, poor performance and fancy foot works that accomplishes nothing. Goals win matches, not lip service and false claim to fame.
Having said all the above, let me hasten to say that I am still a believer in our ability to succeed as a people. We have the talent, the guts and the agility to prevail under any circumstances, if only we apply ourselves and be consistent.
