Record numbers of National Associations to compete in CONCACAF qualifying rounds for Under-20, U-17 2005
23.1.04 - A record number of teams have applied to participate in two upcoming 2005 CONCACAF qualifying rounds for Under-20 and U-17.
A total of 31 countries have submitted their applications to compete in the CONCACAF U-20 qualifying rounds that will ultimately lead to places in the FIFA World Youth (U-20) Championships in 2005 taking place in The Netherlands. This is three more than competed in this event last time. The final round of this CONCACAF qualifying event is due to take place in February – March 2005 with FIFA Championship taking place later that year.
Meanwhile, 32 nations have applied to participate in the preliminary rounds qualification for the U-17 FIFA event to be held in Peru in 2005. This is up from the 29 that participated in qualifying for the equivalent tournament in 2003. The final stage of this CONCACAF event is scheduled for April – May 2005.
These record numbers are part of an ongoing trend within CONCACAF following the record number of National Associations that will compete in the CONCACAF Women’s U-19 (22) and Futsal (20) Qualification rounds this year.
