AP Wednesday, March 12, 2003
NEW YORK (AP) -- Defending champion United States will start the CONCACAF Gold Cup with a first-round match against El Salvador on July 12, while World Cup champion Brazil play Mexico on July 13.
The United States' second game in Group C of the North and Central American and Caribbean regional championships will also be at Foxboro, against the winner of an interzone play-off between teams from Central America and the Caribbean.
If the Americans advance to the quarter-finals, they would play at Foxboro on July 19, and if they go on to the semifinals, they would play at Miami on July 23. The final is on July 27 at Mexico City.
Brazil and South American champion Colombia are included in the 12-nation tournament as special guests. The tournament winner qualifies for the 2004 Copa America and the 2005 FIFA Confederations Cup in Germany.
Brazil and Mexico are in Group A, which is based in Mexico City, and Colombia and Guatemala are in Group B, which is based in Miami. Canada and Costa Rica are in Group D, which is also based in Foxboro.
Four of the 12 nations in the tournament remain to be determined in qualifying.
