Davies urges young experts to get involved

FINANCE minister, Dr Omar Davies, has called for young professionals with managerial expertise to involve themselves with sports teams.
He has also suggested that the Sports Development Foundation pay more attention to physical facilities and urged the Jamaica Football Federation to concentrate on a minimum six football fields where the top clubs can ply their trade.
He noted that while clubs wanted their own field, which were often of poor quality, unevenly bounced, sometimes small, and injurious to players; they might be better served if they were able to compete on top-quality, FIFA-approved fields.
Dr Davies was speaking at the Sherwin Williams Women's Football League awards ceremony held at the JFF office in New Kingston yesterday.
He said that the Culture, Health, Arts, Sports and Education (CHASE) Board, will include one member nominated by the leader of the Opposition to "transcend political inclination".
In CHASE, 40 per cent of the proceeds will go to sports.
According to Dr Davies, the full board for CHASE has formally been put in place. The finance minister, a past student of Glenmuir High, considered sports a "cheap way" of investing in discipline and order.
He also said that women's football deserves special attention and more could be done in promoting the game.
Portmore Strikers' Venicia Reid walked away with the top goal scorer award (18 goals) and was adjudged Most Valuable Player.
Champions' Portmore Strikers won $150,000 along with medals and the trophy. Runners-up, Barbican, won $90,000 and medals while third-placed Untouchable Strikers won $50,000 and medals. Fourth-place Harbour View won $35,000.
Managing director of sponsors, Sherwin Williams, Ian Forbes, committed his company's support of the league for at least another two years.
He said it was Sherwin Williams' way of adding colour to a game that showcases talent and ability and was played in good spirits.
Ironically, champions Portmore Strikers received the highest number of red cards (four) while second-placed Barbican picked up the highest number of yellow cards (11).
Browns Town won the Fair Play award.
