Following close on the heels of a successful show last month at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel, about 30 “Powerful Women” in Jamaica will be heading to New York for two charity performances on Saturday, June 15 at 2 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. at the Michael Schimmel Theatre, PACE University.
Under the theme “Powerful Women Perform For Charity”, female company executives, radio and television personalities, entrepreneurs, chief executive officers and Government Ministers will dance, sing, model and perform stand-up comedy and skits to raise funds for the Mustard Seed Communities’ Home for Children with AIDS, located at Jerusalem, Spanish Town. The show will also feature the Fab Five Band.
Last month, the group brought the house down when more than 1,000 patrons crammed into the ballroom of the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel to view persons they had seen and read about in the media show off their talents to benefit the less fortunate in our society.
Decked in Victorian dress and sporting blonde ringlets the Director of Tourism, Fay Pickersgill, played the part of “Miss Malaprop” with aplomb and when the lights went up on a woman dressed in fashionable black stretch shorts, skimpy top and wig, few people could recognize the General Secretary of the PNP, Senator Maxine Henry-Wilson, who did a three-person skit depicting a typical day in the life of a politician. Her three changes of costume were quick and convincing. The medley of songs with the “ole time religion” flavour performed by President of the National Democratic Movement, Hyacinth Bennett, had patrons swaying, clapping and singing along. And “The Showgirls”, led by full-bodied Glynis Salmon, received the only encore for the night, as Glynis tantalized the audience with seductive moves, much to their delight.
