Glasgow & Lowe combine for a goal as the Wizards lose 2-1

(Teamtalk) -- Kansas City lost 2-1 to Sporting Cristal of Peru in their opening match of the 2001 Copa Merconorte on Wednesday night in the Arrowhead Stadium.
An early goal from Jamaican international Onandi Lowe wasn't enough, as their classy opponent came back for the win.

In the seventh minute, forward Gary Glasgow went on a run down the left wing and found Lowe racing in towards the centre of the box. Glasgow slotted a perfect pass through the Sporting Cristal defence to Lowe.

The striker went in with Cristal keeper Miguel Miranda at the same juncture as the ball arrived which led to the ball spilling out loose.

Lowe was first to react, calmly sending it into the back of the net from nearly six yards out.

Despite good pressure from the current MLS champions, Sporting Cristal leveled the score in the 31st minute as forward Herley Alcazar threaded a ball through the Wizards defence to midfielder Erick Torres as he cut into the box from the right side. Torres' shot deflected off a Wizards defender and sailed awkwardly past the left side of Wizards goalkeeper Bo Oshoniyi to even the game at 1-1.

Cristal came just inches from going ahead in the 40th minute when forward Gaston Cordova banged a shot off the under side of the crossbar.

Cordova turned and raced in on the goal and unloaded a left footed shot that struck the under side of the crossbar and bounced back into play on the left side of the field.

Kansas City midfielder Chris Klein fired in the last shot of anger, just over the goal, before the two teams went into the break on level terms.

Both squads began the second half conservatively, neither creating many opportunities in the opening minutes. It wasn't until the 68th minutes when Cristal forward Piero Alva worked his way into the Kansas City box. Alva unloaded a shot from eight yards out but Wizards 'keeper Bo Oshoniyi was there to knock the ball down and gather it up.

Wizards forward Roy Lassiter showed his own quick footwork in the 72nd minute to create an opportunity for himself, before he rifled a shot toward goal, but it sailed just over the top of the crossbar.

Sporting Cristal took the lead in the 79th minute on a set piece from forward Gaston Cordova. Cordova lined up for a freekick from just outside the top of the Kansas City penalty area. Cordova sent a low lining shot through a crowd of players, and caught the leg of Wizards defender Brandon Prideaux as he was leaping in the air and deflected into the lower left netting to put the South American's up 2-1.

The Wizards tried to pick up the tempo in the waning minutes but the Sporting Cristal defence shut up shop leading to The Wizards closed their first match in the 2001 Copa Merconorte with a 2-1 loss to Sporting Cristal.

Kansas City will return to MLS action this Saturday, when they host the in-form Columbus Crew at Arrowhead Stadium. The Wizards will play their next Copa Merconorte match next Wednesday, August 8 in Torreon, Mexico as they face the 2001 Mexican Verano Champions Santos Laguna.

Cristal will play Barcelona of Ecuador on August 21.

Kansas City: Bo Oshoniyi-GK, Mike Burns (Brandon Prideaux-46), Nick Garcia, Peter Vermes (captain), Andrew Gregor, Chris Klein, Matt McKeon, Mark Santel (Roy Lassiter-59), Francisco Gomez (Kerry Zavagnin-46), Onandi Lowe, Gary Glasgow
