Essex Valley depart for Norway Cup Hurbun Williams Wednesday, July 25, 2001 Love the positivity and for those who don't know this is a psuedo academy. A rose by any other name is still a rose
ESSEX Valley All Stars of St Elizabeth leave for Norway today to compete in the annual international junior football tournament, the Norway Cup, which will be held in Oslo from Sunday, July 29 to Saturday, August 4.
The Norway Cup is one of the world's largest soccer tournaments attracting the participation of some 800 junior club teams from 60 countries. Competition will be held in six different categories from Under-11 to Under-19 with 40- minute matches twice per day.
Essex Valley All Stars will compete in the Under-14 category. Their trip is being sponsored by Alumina Partners of Jamaica (Alpart) and Hydro Aluminium of Norway.
Tim Damon, Alpart's strategic operations manager is head of delegation of the 18 players and five officials.
Essex Valley have become very popular at the Norway Cup with a large following since they advanced to the quarterfinals in their inaugural attempt in 1998 with attractive and progressive play.
Described by the Norwegian national newspaper, Dagbladet as "the most outstanding team from North America and the Caribbean taking part in the Norway Cup", Essex Valley All Stars, are in their fourth consecutive season, looking for more positive results.
"There is great hope for championship success this time," head coach, Andrew Bent, told the Observer yesterday. "Without sounding too confident I believe if the players could get their act together during the tournament there is quite a good chance for us to return home with Jamaica's first international youth football title."
"This," he explained, "is judging from our preparations before departure."
Bent's optimism is kindled by the quality of the 18-man squad with six of the top players from last year's team returning. The final squad of players was selected from a group who, on a consistent basis, distinguished themselves in rural schoolboy football and also in the St Elizabeth Under-15 competitions, Bent said.
Lovell Palmer and Copeland Lewis are two former Essex Valley All Stars Under-14 players who have since represented Jamaica at the Under-17 level.
One of the highlights of the tour for the Essex valley team will be the opportunity to play a Brazil junior club team during the competition.
Squad: Jerome Morrison, Lewis Planter, Codray Martin, Conroy Wright, Troy Powell, Trevor McMohan, Dwayne Simpson, Mark Brown, Troy Barnes, Christopher Vassell, Verrol Webb, Comar Pascoe, Roy Fagan, Andre Anderson, Enrico Smith, Jermaine West, Melvin Weller and Jason Simpson.
Officials: Tim Damon, head of delegation, Grace Williams, team manager, Andrew Bent head coach, Paul Facey, assistant coach and Kedlee Powell, goalkeeper coach.
