Honduran player tests positive, suspended from Copa America
The Associated Press
BOGOTA, Colombia (July 22, 2001 04:48 PM EDT) - A Honduran soccer player has been suspended from the Copa America after testing positive for cocaine and marijuana.
The South American Soccer Confederation said Sunday that Oscar Lagos failed the drug test after a match with Costa Rica on July 13.
Honduras lost 1-0 but went on to defeat Bolivia and Uruguay to qualify for the quarterfinals. The team faces Brazil on Monday.
The doping case is the first in the 18-day tournament, which ends July 29.
The statement said a second test was conducted in the presence of the Honduras team doctor, Oscar Benitez, and corroborated the findings.
Lagos was suspended from the tournament. His case was referred to national, regional and world federations for further action.
Only the player will be sanctioned, not the team, the confederation said. Still, Honduras will not be eligible for the "Fair Play" trophy, it said.
Lagos already has returned to Honduras, members of the team delegation said.
