 HOT PROSPECT: Fuller in training.
GRAEME CROSER
HEARTS boss Craig Levein today hailed new recruit Ricardo Fuller as a star in the making.
The Jamaican striker is in line to make his Jambos debut in tomorrow’s derby clash with Hibs at Easter Road, having agreed a three-month loan deal from Danish outfit Tivoli Gardens.
Levein has been in the market for a target man since he took the reins at the club nearly a year ago and turned his attention to the 22-year-old when a bid to land Greece’s Under-21 internationalist Georgios Vakouftsis failed.
There’s no doubt that Fuller - capped several times by his country - will provide the necessary muscle in attack, but the Tynecastle chief believes he also possesses the sort of flair which will have the fans on their feet.
Levein admitted: "It’s no secret that we have needed a bit more presence in the attack.
"Ricardo will provide that, but he’s not just an out-and-out targetman.
"He is something a wee bit different than the Hearts fans are used to and I’m sure they’ll really take to.
"He is still a young boy and I think he has a fantastic future ahead of him.
"Yes, he’ll take the ball in and hold it up, bringing those around him into the game, but there’s a lot more to his game.
"He’s full of tricks and flicks and can do the unexpected.
"He’s also fond of getting the ball at his feet and running at defenders. I’m sure he’ll provide a lot of excitement."
Levein’s other much-publicised ‘problem’ position was the right-back berth and he’s also moved in the past couple of weeks to fill that breach in the side.
He pulled off something of a transfer coup by enticing Leeds United’s Alan Maybury north and, judging by the 23-year-old’s showing in his debut against St Johnstone last weekend, Hearts have a player on their hands.
The Republic of Ireland internationalist is also set to make his derby debut tomorrow, and Levein is excited about the prospect of seeing both he and fellow recent recruit Stephane Mahe, attacking down the flanks.
He continued: "With Maybury on board we finally have a balance which I think the club has lacked for a long time.
"We have two full-backs who can get forward and that means we’re not dependant on one side of the park on which to build the attack.
"And, with Ricardo Fuller giving us something different in attack, I think we’ll cause teams more problems offensively.
"Things are coming together and new signings give everybody at the club - the fans, the players and the management - a lift.
"Certainly the players are all on their toes in training, there’s an extra zip about them because they know they face competition for their places."
Hearts secured clearance for Fuller with just a minute to spare. The green light for the striker came through at 4.59pm yesterday and Levein admitted: "It is a big relief.
"The Department of Employment assured us that as soon as they got the papers they would rush it through and they just made it."

Based on what we saw in Foxboro...Ricardo just needs to return to full fitness.
Certainly should have had a penalty in that game.

Fuller would do well to "make" goals for his strike partner and others at this stage. He definately has the goods to make his teammates better...and keep himself in the starting eleven....as time goes by he will get stronger and start to score.
In Foxboro he appeared weak...certainly his shot was ineffective.
