  • Critical thinking displacing academic qualification

Diane Edwards, president of Jamaica Promotions (JAMPRO), says that while the country is doing everything to equip its human capital with skills for the job market, global companies like Google are employing critical thinkers over persons with academic qualifications.

Edwards used data from Glassdoor, one of the world’s largest jobs recruiting websites based in California, in the US, which has pointed out that 15 of the biggest companies in the world are no longer focusing on finding employees with degrees.

“If you look at people like Apple, IBM, Google and Amazon, many of them founded by high-school and usually university dropouts, they are not so interested in educational qualifications now,” said Edwards. “They are non-traditional thinkers … they are looking for critical-thinking skills“

See it in the workplace everyday.
    • Don't let negative things break you, instead let it be your strength, your reason for growth. Life is for living and I won't spend my life feeling cheated and downtrodden.

Jamaican people are so far behind the curve on education & development issues it aint funny

Just noticing how the modern world works now??? Not to mention how it will work in just a few years when it's an order of magnitude changed by robotics, AI, biotech etc etc?? Worst of all...Not knowing how to even START to address the problem effectively??

Jamaicans - as I've stated many times - are stuck in the past with their mid-20th century thinking & actions. By the time they catch up on what's current now in 2019...it'll be 2050 ... and we'll still be 3-4 generations of technology behind even moderately successful nations

All the nonsense talk about how many "subjects" kids have...when that stuff allows them to do NOTHING of real 21st century value.

The same dummy people will yap about how "Jamaica should be like Singapore or Israel". Guess what -- Countries that are serious about development in the 21st century do NOT have at the very top of their agenda renting rooms to fat tourists, feeding them, driving them around to view the natives, serenading them...and selling them useless trinkets.

Yes we should conduct similar low-skill activities like every other nation because people need the work and there is some FX & economic multiplier upside. But having such activities as the top priority -- as it eternally is in Jamaica and similar backward-thinking countries -- is a prescription for continued failure & backwardness

Get real JA...or remain poor & dumb into eternity
