  • With virus under control, Aus and New Zealand

The government should enforce a stricter lockdown of the country for at least the next month to curb the increasing spread of this virus. They should ignore the political noise with blinkered focus on getting ahead of the curve. They've done a credible job so far but it appears that they are bowing to the public and political demands in easing some the restrictions.

HAVELOCK NORTH, New Zealand — With their coronavirus outbreaks under control, New Zealand and Australia are discussing forming a "travel bubble" that would allow people to resume international journeys across the Tasman Sea without quarantine restrictions.

The move, which is still weeks if not months away, would enable both countries to take a step toward normality and help their tourism industries, while serving as a potential template for other governments as they emerge from the crisis.

Jacinda Ardern, New Zealand’s prime minister, is scheduled to join Australia’s national cabinet meeting, along with Australian state premiers, on Tuesday to discuss the proposal.

“Such a meeting is without precedent and highlights … the mutual importance of our two countries and economies to each other,” Ardern told reporters Monday. “Both our countries’ strong record of fighting the virus has placed us in the enviable position of being able to plan the next stage in our economic rebuild and to include trans-Tasman travel and engagement in our strategy.”

Scott Morrison, Australia’s prime minister, last week suggested that Ardern call into the meeting to discuss the arrangement. The two leaders are from opposite ends of the political spectrum and have clashed previously, but are seeing eye-to-eye on the coronavirus recovery.

New Zealand & Australia don't have opposition parties hellbent on regaining power by any means necessary...we have an opposition that is actively spreading fake videos online in an effort to undermine the government...we are not the same...
