  • China's policy toward Latin America and the Caribbean

Third, let's encourage more exchanges in education, culture and in the people-to-people field. We need more cultural performances both ways. Degrees attained at the University of the West Indies, University of Technology and Caribbean Maritime Institute are recognised in China. The two sides are working to exchange language and science teachers at universities and high schools. China is offering more than 360 human resource training positions to Jamaica this year, 40 per cent more than last year. China is very grateful to Jamaica for training 10 Chinese sports coaches and students and for offering 10 scholarships at the Caribbean Maritime Institute.

As I've said before, we must learn to to speak the language and learn more about Chinese culture since we are getting deeper into bed with them. Conversational Spanish and now Mandarin Chinese should be in the school curriculum.

Four more institutions to offer Mandarin come September - Cornwall College, CMU, NCU and Police College sign MOU with embassy

Four local institutions of learning and training have latched on to the opportunity of being able to teach their students Chinese Mandarin, when they signed a memorandum of understanding with the government and people of China on Thursday at the Chinese Embassy in St Andrew.

Roughly 10 Chinese educators will fly into Jamaica for the beginning of the new school year in September and head to the Caribbean Maritime University (CMU), Northern Caribbean University (NCU), the National Police College of Jamaica and Cornwall College to teach the language.
