  • Paul Marin!!!.......Take a look at this

Saw what you wrote about your grassroots development. Contacted someone, and they sent this. I hope it helps in some way.

Thanks USAF! The joyofpeople philosophy has been PROVEN to be correct. Structured play - where kids are being told what to do - does not inspire creativity nor does it inspire individual problem solving. If you think about when you were a little kid, you just "played"- you were creative, you made up games, you used your imagination, and you solved problems with your friends, even it was - "what do you want to play today"?. Kids nowadays are being TOLD what to do, how to think, when to think etc. etc. and it kills their creativity and kills innovation. Part of the program I am putting together is based on giving the kids the game. This is in line with the "whole part whole" philosophy in football which is now being adapted more broadly. It is based on the premise that you start practice with little kids just allowing them to PLAY first, worry about coaching later. So in that model, you let them play, identify the problem in the topic you want to introduce, ask them questions and let them collectively solve the problem using a technique called "guided discovery". For example, a kid (e.g. Joey) dribbles the ball with his stronger right foot down the left wing...the defender takes it from him because the ball is not on the left (i.e. the body is not shielding the ball), when the ball goes out of play, you say "Joey, how come Freddie won that ball so easily?" Regardless of the answer (unless it's the "right" one) you would then ask "What would happen if you dribbled with your LEFT FOOT? Would it be easier or harder for him?" - If the kid agrees, you tell him to try it next time - AND THAT'S IT! Anyway, I could talk about this forever. Thanks again for the information, very useful.

You're welcome!!! I'm happy to see you & others doing this, and truly contributing to the grassroots growth of soccer.

The co-founder of JOTP, Ted Kroeten, has a 18 year-old son, Zinedine Kroeten (don't have to ask who is Ted's favorite player), a highly rated youth player in MN who went through JOTP. He just got an invitation from Werder Bremen for a 2 week trial.

Keep forgetting to ask if you have contacted Inter Miami about your grassroots development project???.......Inter Miami has been touting their plans for youth development in South Florida, and it includes partnering with existing youth development teams/academies, to develop a feeder network for their academy to pro teams.......These MLS teams have the money & resources, so see if they will fully or partially fund your project, as well as pay for your licenses & any training you need/want.
Some MLS teams worked with 1 or 2 independent youth academies, then AUFC took it to the next level. Now, other MLS teams want to match or surpass them.

Too early. They are still putting their administration together. Because they are giving training at the academy for free, all the best players will end up there. Not sure what happens next. The DOC from my old club is now on their staff, so I'm sure there will be partnering - they are only 1 of 3 DA clubs in the area.

Yeah!!! They hired Weston FC academy technical director (Victor Pastora) & U12 head coach (Juan Carlos Michia), in January, and last week they hired FC Dallas academy U13 head coach (Javier Morales).
The more progressive MLS teams are looking to increase their reach & investment into the inner cities & other areas where there is little to no structure nor programs for youth soccer.

Correct on the hires. They must be paying Victor a bunch b/c he was making over $175K a year at Weston if rumour serves. Last weekend, the Weston Cup boasted 725 teams in their tournament and over 1200 games, so they have the $$$. They used almost every park in Broward County. On a more somber note - Victor may get fired because there was a lawsuit filed by one of Weston FC's academy players; the claim is that he was held down and subjected to a sharpie being driven up his butt by some older DA players. I think Victor was in charge at the time and that he is named in the lawsuit. There may also be criminal charges pending (against the older players - I think 2 of them were 18). Victor is a nice guy and a good coach...I hope he is not affected.
