Heroic JC, Waterford for Manning final

BY HOWARD WALKER Observer staff reporter walkerh@jamaicaobserver.com

    Sunday, November 21, 2010

WATERFORD High and Jamaica College (JC) advanced to next Saturday's ISSA/Pepsi/Digicel Manning Cup final following semi-final wins against Norman Manley and Bridgeport, respectively, at Ferdie Neita Park yesterday.

A courageous JC, playing with nine men since the 75th minute, defeated Bridgeport 4-1 on penalties after battling to a 0-0 draw in normal time and extra-time.

Meanwhile, Waterford reached their first ever final after edging Norman Manley 1-0 courtesy of a brilliant solo effort from Andre McFarlene in the 87th.

JC, winners in 2007 and losing finalists in 2008, defied the odds after picking up two red cards in the space of four minutes. Odane Greenwood and Junior Flemming received straight red cards in the 71st and 75th, respectively, for violent play.

Following the first dismissal, JC's coach Alfred Henry got into a rage reminiscent of that which landed him in hot water with ISSA last season, in venting his anger at the match officials. He had to be forcibly restrained by team manager Ian Forbes.

With things looking to get nasty on the sidelines, instead of retreating into a defensive wall, JC went on the attack and should have won by at least two clear goals.

The outstanding Ashani Walker tormented the Bridgeport backline and missed a glorious chance to win the game in regulation time.

But the clearest of chances landed at the feet of Andre Powell, who blasted high over the empty net with virtually the last kick of the 15 minutes of extra-time.

After an even contest prior to the JC dismissals, despite playing with two extra men, Bridgeport looked thoughtless and never really threatened.

Walker, Conroy Johnson, Theo Campbell and Nicholas Scott converted from the spot for a deserved win for JC.

Bridgeport missed their two first penalties from Tyshaun Rainsford and Jermaine Morgan. Captain Jameil Hardware scored the third for Bridgeport.

Waterford's historic moment was a fitting tribute to fallen utility player Okeese Lewis who died tragically on Tuesday night.

Two red cards in the space of four minutes sound like somebody nevah want JC reach the final.
"He has been the best so far based on his level of professionalism and great motivational skills. That made him one of the top coaches I have ever been under. He was exceptional in getting the best out of his players."
