  • Rebel Salute brings jobs & joy to St Ann

In its 26-year history, Rebel Salute has grown from strength to strength, all the while maintaining its Rastafari-friendly design of clean, conscious reggae music by a mix of veterans and newcomers, served up with mouthfuls of Pan-African ideologies, ital food and clouds of ganja smoke, sans alcohol. Now, with its 27th instalment scheduled for January 17 and 18, 2020, at Grizzly’s Plantation Cove, Rebel Salute is poised and happy to continue its signature execution, with event organisers boasting the festival’s economic contributions, citing an impressive foreign versus local audience ratio.

Rebel Salute began as an earthday celebration for reggae music icon Tony Rebel, but decades of nurture transformed the event into a beacon for the Jamaican diaspora. During the festival’s media launch on December 17 at the six-month-old AC Hotel by Marriott, the icon himself took care to specifically highlight that his team’s research concluded that as much as 49 per cent of the live audience are visitors.

The mayor of St Ann’s Bay, Councillor Michael Belnavis, reiterated Tony Rebel’s claim, noting the town’s increased hotel bookings, and the bustle the ‘busy-ness’ inspires in the township. “It goes right down to the little man that sells at the side of the road. There’s direct and indirect employment and we love that,” Belnavis said.

Springfield welcomes the gift of Unruly Fest

Unruly Fest, like Christmas, will catch residents of Springfield, St Thomas, in a good mood when it rolls in to the Goodyear Oval for its *second staging tomorrow. The event, which is the brainchild of popular dancehall artiste and son of the soil Popcaan, premiered last December at Lyssons Park in the parish. This year, it is being moved to the grounds of the old tyre factory, a larger venue, which residents believe is perfect for an event that promises to once again inject some life into the *eastern parish’s ailing *entertainment scene.

      LIGHT IN THE DARKNESS
“We feel great because him bring light to a darkness in a community weh nothing nuh really gwaan … , even in the whole parish of St Thomas. From Morgan Heritage dem left, nobody nuh really do nothing towards St Thomas and entertainment here,” a hopeful resident said. “Popcaan come up, and him put on kids’ treat, and now him a put on show weh everyone a St Thomas can mek something off of. So mi feel great.”

I like the idea...but the name "Unruly" Fest.

Or maybe I don't get it.
The only time TRUTH will hurt you...is if you ignore it long enough

Massive support for Unruly Fest - Popcaan’s concert a ‘blessing’ for St Thomas

“This is a St Thomas product. I’m so proud of St Thomas tonight. This is my hometown, so whatever me get, me share it with my hometown,” Popcaan said as he addressed the massive crowd that converged on the Goodyear Oval in the parish for Unruly Fest.

Often described as the ‘forgotten parish’, St Thomas does not usually see a lot of action, especially where live entertainment is concerned. But it seems all that is about to change as Unruly Fest stamps its class on the industry.

Although just in its second year, Popcaan’s Unruly Fest is fast becoming one of the best live entertainment events in the island. Saturday’s show yielded such a massive turnout that it caused a traffic pile-up that stretched for miles leading to the venue. But a two-hour wait in traffic was worth it once one arrived at the event.

Patrons were treated to unforgettable performances from a line-up that included the likes of Sanchez, Capleton, Bounty Killer, Beenie Man, to ‘90s front-runners Frisco Kid and Mr Lexx, to new generation artistes Chronic Law, Stylo G, Quada, and Skillibeng. There were zero disappointments as far as performances were concerned as each artiste delivered on the promise of quality entertainment.

So engrossed were patrons that even when it began raining in the wee hours of Sunday morning, many stood in the downpour, refusing to miss out on a minute of the onstage action. A few told The Gleaner that with Unruly Fest shining much needed light on their parish, their attendance was their way of saying thanks to Popcaan and his team.
