  • Government to establish 6 new STEM academies

KINGSTON, Jamaica— Six new science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) academies are to be developed at the high school level that will prepare students in the public education system for careers in STEM fields.

This was disclosed by Prime Minister Andrew Holness, as he outlined some of the plans of the Government for the new term, at his swearing-in ceremony held at King's House on yesterday.

“We will also develop an academy for the creative and the performing arts and we will improve access to financing, so that all our students can have a fair and equal opportunity to access tertiary education,” Holness said.

Holness trumpets world-class broadband for growth spurt

Prime Minister Andrew Holness laid out a list of “nation-building” investment strategies, including a world-class broadband system that he says will create the space needed for Jamaica to return to economic growth.

Holness’ planned upgrade of the nation’s Internet broadband comes as no surprise. The two major service providers, Flow and Digicel, have come in for biting criticism for patchy service delivered to hundreds of thousands of customers, with dropped calls and unstable Internet.

Holness said the new administration will be emphasising the development of human resources to fill out the foundation of new industries in Jamaica for coding and artificial intelligence for the expansion of knowledge services.

Don't forget the performing arts academy too.

Design competition coming for construction of STEM schools

Minister of Education, Youth and Information (MOEYI) Fayval Williams has revealed that the Government has made significant progress to advance the construction of specialised STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) schools across the island. Williams told The Gleaner, “We are advanced in the process ... we are going into a design competition for those schools and we will take it from there, but we are seized of the urgency to have STEM infused in all our schools.”

Williams explained that these STEM schools will also be accompanied by a shift in the overall process of delivering education for Jamaicans. “Our National Standards Curriculum is STEM-based and that has been in existence now from 2018. Obviously, it requires us to do a number of things, including more training for our teachers and to have our physical environment to be a STEM environment,” she said.
