  • Jamaica once couldn’t pay its light bill

Now its economy is welcoming Porsche and BMW.

    KINGSTON
Just seven years ago, Jamaica was an economic basket case. The government was bleeding so much red ink it couldn’t fix potholes or keep streetlights on as it faced a staggering $20 billion debt in 2013.

Today the nation of 2.8 million is the economic-turnaround story of the Caribbean. Among the tough belt-tightening decisions that got it here: improving tax and customs collection; speeding up construction permits and business registrations; imposing a three-year freeze on public sector wages, privatizing its main airport and seaport, and restructuring billions of dollars in domestic debt.

“What we’ve seen over the last five, six, seven years are things that nobody thought you could tackle,” said Brian Wynter, outgoing governor of the Bank of Jamaica, the country’s central bank. “Not just the world is looking at it, but Jamaicans are looking at that.”

Clarke is married and has two children. Clarke attended St. Richards Primary School in Kingston and graduated from Munro College in St. Elizabeth Jamaica where he was awarded the Jamaica Independent Scholarship, for study at the University of the West Indies. He graduated from the University of the West Indies with a degree in Mathematics and Computer Science where he received First Class Honours and won the prize for the best degree with the highest marks among students in the Faculty of Natural Sciences across all campuses of UWI in Jamaica, Trinidad and Barbados. He was awarded the Commonwealth Scholarship to attend Linacre College, Oxford University where he earned an M.Sc. in Applied Statistics. In his thesis he examined volatility on the Jamaica Stock Exchange. He subsequently won the Rhodes Scholarship and earned a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Mathematics (Numerical Analysis) from Oxford University (also at Linacre College).[9]

The PNP was going to shut the junior stock market down.
Luckily they never got the chance.
That was a bone skull move, now they are singing it praise and the other countries in the region is now looking at it.

Phillips and PNP did a decent job but they need to open their mind and come up with polices that will improve people's life.

Policies are building blocks of other policies, the JLP has built on the PNP infrastructural policies post recession or with a booming world economy at their backs.

Kudos to them,I liked how they drew for Lee chin and this young guy Clarke, refreshing.

Let's hope whoever's gets elected keep the same visions in place and build on those policies of infrastructure and business.

There are so many little things the PNP could do even in tough times. They were good accountants but had no imagination.

An example is 1.5. Another is the Junior stock market. Another is to sell the share of Wington (SP). Building St.Thomas town centre which is about to start. Port Royal cruise shipping, housing for tourism workers and upgrade "big yards"

PNP have to sit down and think what they can do within the fiscal space to improve lives.

Like the JLP could have done when the JLP got voted out after 1 term post recession i.e tough time with Audley Shaw as minister of finance andHolness as P.M.

Look yuh live and learn,Anju/JLP has learnt, still has alot more to do.

they did some massive changes then. Remember how much interest rate was?

they bought about the Junior stock exchange and JDX which Peter did JDX 2 or NDX which was a game changer. The current JLP definitely ahead of the current PNP in innovative solutions.

2007-2011 was in the heart of the recession, not post.

Best move he made was turning it over to Clarke and Lee Chin.Thats it .Everything else is cosmetic.

Lee Chin is just a consultant, nothing turned over to him.

It is smart to get him, Aubyrn Hill, DK brother from JMMB, Butch other involved.

Young Clark is really smart and independent like his uncle who was also finance minister Claude Clark.

turn it over means he is running the government.
No two way about that. You have any proof of that?
