Gilbert Russell passes on
GILBERT Russell, father of four-time World Junior Championships gold medallist, Gillian Russell-Love, died yesterday morning at the University Hospital of the West Indies (UHWI) hours after undergoing double heart bypass surgery on Thursday night.
Russell’s son, Bob, told Sporting World yesterday that he got the call some time after 2:00 am yesterday morning that the former Clarendon College head boy had not recovered from the surgery.
Sixty-nine-year-old Russell suffered a heart attack in February and had been in hospital for several weeks awaiting surgery.
The father of three, who was born on March 10, 1938, coached his daughter Gillian to WJC titles in the 100m hurdles in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, in 1990 at age 16 and two years later she repeated the feat in Seoul, South Korea.
The former Campion College student was also a member of Jamaica’s 4x100m gold medal-winning relay teams at the same World Junior Championships.
Her father, known as Gillie to those familiar with him, captained both Clarendon College’s track and field and football teams at various times during his stay at the school.
The eldest of nine children for his mother and third of 11 for both parents, was, along with his brothers, an avid enthusiast of middle distance running, specialising in the 800m, 1500m, and 5000m.
