Town Planning Authority, NRCA boards get two-month extension
Tuesday, October 02, 2007
HEALTH and Environment Minister Ruddy Spencer has asked the boards of the National Resources Conservation Authority (NRCA) and the Town and Planning Authority to remain in place for another two months in order to deal with outstanding issues.
According to a press release from the ministry, Spencer said the extension was to facilitate a smooth transition due to the change of Government, while ensuring that important matters are given immediate attention.
Additionally, the ministry said the chairpersons of both boards are willing to co-operate during the two-month extension until the minister appoints a new board. However, the ministry did not say whether the current board would be reinstated.
"Dr Ruth Potopsingh, chairman of the Town and Country Planning Authority, in a response, said the members of the board are pleased to continue offering their service to the nation," said the ministry. "She noted that it was a normal practice that resignations are offered when there is a change of Government, however, the members of the Town and Country Planning Authority Board are a group of persons who are happy to continue serving in the interim in whatever capacity the minister requests."
Similarly, the ministry said James Rawle, chairman of the NRCA, said his board members were equally committed to continuing the important work of the authority during the two-month extension.
The NRCA's function is "to take such steps as are necessary for the effective management of the physical environment of Jamaica so as to ensure the conservation, protection, and proper use of its natural resources".
