  • Gov’t to address Don Wehby controversy

    Thursday, 20 September 2007

The Bruce Golding-led administration is to break its silence Thursday on the conflict of interest controversy surrounding the appointment of Minister Without Portfolio in the Ministry of Finance, Senator Don Wehby.

Our news centre has been informed that the Office of the Prime Minister is to issue a statement on the matter Thursday.

It will give details of a new arrangement which has reportedly been crafted in a bid to douse speculation and concerns which have surfaced since Senator Wehby's appointment a week ago.

Questions have been raised about a possible conflict of interest as Senator Wehby still has ties with the private sector.

Senator Wehby will receive his full salary as a Government Minister.

However, Grace Kennedy will pay the difference between his ministerial salary and what he previously earned.

There have been calls for Senator Wehby to resign from Grace Kennedy and sever all ties with the private sector if he intends to remain a member of the Golding Cabinet.

Mr. Wehby is currently on two years secondment from Grace Kennedy where he was the Chief Executive Officer of its investment arm.

Former Minister of Finance Dr. Omar Davies has expressed concern that Mr. Wehby could be left in a compromising position if he is required to make decisions which could affect the company to which he is still attached.
