  • A lovely little gem for Maudib.

"At Kingston, Jamaica in April 1975, Prime Minister Michael Manley, a light skinned West Indian, presided with panache and spoke with great eloquence. But I found his views quixotic. He advocated a "redistribution of the worlds wealth." His country was a well endowed island of 2000 square miles, with several mountains in the center, where coffee and other subtropical crops were grown. They had beautiful holiday homes built by Americans as winter homes. Theirs was a relaxed culture. The people were full of song and dance, spoke eloquently, danced vigorously, and drank copiously. Hard work they had left behind with slavery."

How can you take this seriously? Probably an honest mistake, or maybe Lee was poor at geography, but which country is 2000 square miles? Was he referring to T&T?

What other "subtropical crops" do well in the mountainous centre?

But it can't be that, because he also said we don't work hard any more.

Lee Kwan Yew analysis of Michael Manley and the Jamaican people at the time was spot on.. as History has demonstrated.

Only a Quixotic leader with a 'relaxed' populace could suffocate Jamaica's potential to such a degree as exists today.

I wonder however where he got his data on the dimensions of Jamaica..
