  • RIP: Harry Bellafonte

Harry Belafonte (born Harold George Bellanfanti Jr.; March 1, 1927 – April 25, 2023) was an American singer, activist, and actor. As arguably the most successful Caribbean-American pop star, he popularized Jamaicanmento folk songs which was marketed as TrinbagonianCalypso musical style with an international audience in the 1950s. His breakthrough album Calypso (1956) was the first million-selling LP by a single artist.[1]

Belafonte was best known for his recordings of "The Banana Boat Song", with its signature "Day-O" lyric, "Jump in the Line", and "Jamaica Farewell". He recorded and performed in many genres, including blues, folk, gospel, show tunes, and American standards. He also starred in several films, including Carmen Jones (1954), Island in the Sun (1957), and Odds Against Tomorrow (1959).

THERE IS ONLY ONE ONANDI LOWE!

"Good things come out of the garrisons" after his daughter won the 100m Gold For Jamaica.

"It therefore is useless and pointless, unless it is for share malice and victimisation to arrest and charge a 92-year-old man for such a simple offence. There is nothing morally wrong with this man smoking a spliff; the only thing wrong is that it is still on the law books," said Chevannes.

Son and friends of Harry Belafonte reflect on his legacy

In 1956, global entertainment icon and civil rights activist Harry Belafonte had already bulldozed his way to the top of the Billboard album charts. His release called Calypso was cemented on the weekly American charts for over half a year and its unprecedented success earned for him the distinction for being the first artiste in pop history to sell over a million units.

Belafonte passed away on Tuesday at 96 in Harlem, reportedly from congestive heart failure. His son David reflected briefly on his father’s legacy.
