Robbery cited as motive behind PM’s bodyguard’s death

Investigators probing Thursday night's fatal shooting of one of the bodyguards of Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller say evidence gathered so far suggests that robbery was the motive.

Detective Sergeant Everton Brown, who also served as a bodyguard to P.J. Patterson when he was Prime Minister, was gunned down on Sundown Crescent off Molynes Road in St. Andrew.

It is reported that shortly before 9 o'clock Sergeant Brown took a female companion home.

Gunmen then walked up and opened fire hitting Sergeant Brown.

He was pronounced dead at hospital.

His killers took his firearm and motorcar.

A police investigator told RJR News Friday that shortly before the shooting, two men were seen travelling on a bicycle along Sundown Crescent.

The investigator explained that the men saw the policeman and the woman conversing in the parked vehicle, rode past them, then returned shortly after on foot.

The gunmen reportedly surprised Sergeant Brown who tried to pull his firearm.

He was shot in the armpit.

The woman jumped from the vehicle and escaped.

The policeman's car which was stolen by the killers was found minutes later near Bay Farm Road.

Police believe that the killers are from the nearby Olympic Gardens community.

Deputy Commissioner of Police in Charge of Crime, Mark Shields, who is leading the investigation, told our news centre that a top level probe is underway.

And the Jamaica Police Federation has also condemned the murder of Detective Sergeant Brown.

Chairman of the Federation Corporal Raymond Wilson says the Force is not ready to give up the fight against the gunmen.

"Especially this year when so many of our members' lives have been taken out by these people who do not seem to care about life. A policeman's life is just as important as any other and even more so the fact that he has been given the responsibility to preserve the lives of his fellowmen in this country," said Corporal Wilson.

"And so I just want to implore on our members to be strong and continue to take the fight to these animals. This will not go untreated and unnoticed and we will do whatever is necessary even of we have to take along with them some of those who continue to hide them," he said.

And Deputy Leader of the Jamaica Labour Party, Derrick Smith, has also expressed condolences to the family, relatives and friends of Detective Sargeant Brown.

In a statement Friday afternoon Mr. Smith said he is encouraging the police to spare no effort in bringing to justice those responsible for the policeman's death.

What you should be asking is who chooses these bodyguards?

How can the sittng PM have such disasters around her? One in car stealing ring and the other executed. Did she choose party hacks over the professional recommendation of the police high command?

The police High Command do not make reccomendations for this type of assignment. It is a known fact the MPs chose their bodyguards, Basically the MP chose someone he or she knows and trust with his or her life that person chose the rest of the team. The team members cannot be supporters of the other party and there is bias to chosing party loyalist. As KD Knight once said, I would not feel comfortable with a policeman who lives in Tivoli Gardens protecting me.
The same type of thinking that created a problem cannot be used to solve the problem.

                      Any you jumping to conclusions.

How the hell do you come to that conclusion.

The main pooint is that the PM of the land has been saddled with at least one tiefing bodyguard and another dying suspiciously. The PM!!!!! For good ness sake. Sometimes we get so familiar with the first name basis, that we forget we are talking about the highest political office in the Land.

If that is what she gets, Lord help the rest of us. I am only hoping that SHE did not choose this for herself.

And to TIME, the police high command as a part of their screening would ensure that a Tivoli guard was not guarding a PNP high ranking official, for the sake of BOTH.

No first name basis nonsense...we ALL use Bruce and Portia. Neither are my friends or colleagues in teh true sense of the word. Kill that argument one time.
                        1. Bodyguard charged - not yet found guilty.
                        2. Another one murdered - motive said to be robbery.

Do you HONESTLY think the PM selects the guards?????
                        Give me a break!!!

                          U misread me again.

I am saying that the post of the PM needs better protection than that. These situations make me think that the PM is too exposed.

Bodyguard was on the run. Bit of a slamdunk.
The other one could indeed by a chance thing.... another unfortunate incident in Jamaica.

I am saying that it would be a better explanation if SHE DID choose...Thus the professionals could be exempt from blame. As it stands, these 2 potential breaches in security so clsoe to the PM is unacceptable!

If Portia did not choose and the Police HC did not choose, who does?? It needs to be changed fast.

Myriad problems, remember the attraction to the PNP is socialism. You have to defend socialism more than the party itself. Furthermore, Bruce first order of business was to make what we will all agree to be socialists' reform, yet his efforts are being dismissed... by socialists, it makes no sense.
